I have, yeah, a couple of times, and it sounds like the chick-on has, too. Schaefer lists it in his bible so it's no real secret - that's where I got the idea. I did the ridge direct with a daypack, with an overnight bag it's easier to cut from the top of the switchbacks below CR down to the quarter domes. Or vice-versa. Other short-cuts are available. That's a nice piece of news - thanks, I had not seen it. That's a very pretty stretch of coast, quiet beaches and bluffs - and lots of brussels sprouts.by QITNL - General Discussion
Oops! My reply was intended as a wild guess, didn't mean to shut the ballot boxes so soon. The ridge between HD & CR is one of my favorite hikes in the park, that's for sure. If you like a little spice, there is a system of ledges on the left side of my photo that will take you right to the top of that sucker. There's an awesome little campsite (dry) up there, too.by QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Looking back through my photos, I think the campground opened on 6/18/09, which was a fairly low snow year. My guess is that the road will be open by 5/15 or earlier. The campground could open around 6/15 - conceivably earlier - but it will be more dependent upon resources, not weather. 7/1 at the latest. (Not looking at a calendar - round numbers). Yep, and back in the day when wi-fi was scarce, they were last and first chance. The dollar menu rocks. What point am I missing? If the view is the criteria, the summit of Whitney is a big flat pile of rubble. Half Dome is similarly level. You can go to the edge and look down, but neither offers much of a 360. Much better views in the vicinity of each can be found from Mt Muir and Clouds Rest. You can enjoy them relatively crowd-free since neither has been turned into an industry. Not tby QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Half Dome sucks. It's totally overrated. It's a nice big block of granite, but getting to the top is not a major achievement. Mr. Half Dome might disagree, but he's busy doing motivational speaking on cruise ships. Mt. Whitney sucks. It's totally overrated. Hey qumqats, I disagree on two points: >If safety is a concern it seems to me it's a no-brainer that another cable is needed. Another cable is not going to happen. That doesn't mean safety isn't a concern, but another cable isn't going to happen, at least for the foreseeable future, our lifetimes. >No matter what they do, the trail up to Half Dome is NOT wilderness. 10 yards fby QITNL - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Do you have a map and compass and know how to use it? If not, you should. There are lots of good maps in the internet, be sure to have something in your pocket. Hi again Ben - The ticketing/check-in process at AMTRAK stations is quite casual. Nothing like the the airlines. You shouldn't need to get there too far in advance.
