While I COMPLETELY agree that people need to take responsibility for themselves and their loved ones in the wilderness, I am VERY glad for the signs at Vernal Falls. While I'm sure my wife would not have swam in emerald pool, it was very inviting to her (she loves to swim in mountain streams). The sign meant that it was never even a brief consideration!by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
If it happened to me I would think it was very "cool" and would have tried desperately to get pictures. That said, that area should be kept wilderness and the planes don't belong there. There are plenty of other places to get canyon flight time.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
BAC IA full sized for me. I could shed some weight with something else, put I already own it (two actually, one for my wife) and it is very comfortable. Waking up without any additional aches and pains from sleeping on something to hard is worth it. Besides, I'm too cheap to replace it.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I understand why many think the Half Dome cables should not be there. If they were not already there I certainly would not be in favor of them being put in. However, if it were not for the cables my wife and I would have never hiked to the top of Half Dome. It will remain a memorable enough trip that we will talk about it forever. They may not belong there, but they have made many, many pby Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
When we first went to the valley with the kids we took the shuttle everywhere (except Bridalveil Falls, stopped there on the way in). I remember thinking that if it covered a larger area and was easier to use it would have been perfect. I would MUCH rather take a shuttle like that than constantly try to find parking.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The first need to overkill for Yosemite. I have one and used it Yosemite. It's pretty heavy. If you do decide to use it I suggest having a wide mouth nalgene bottle to attach to the filter to pump into. A heavy setup at over a pound. And seriously there is no chance of a viral infection from the water.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotetomdisco Larry, Thank you very much for the Packitguormet.com food source reference. I've just placed an order to try some of their items. Some of it sounds better than some other alternatives I was contemplating. Jim No problem, I hope you like it.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
For "backpack" food I HIGHLY recommend the PIG ( //www.packitgourmet.com/ ). My wife is very picky about the taste of her food and she loved most everything we tried. They use a good combination of spices that really make the food taste good. We tried several at home and decided that we could order anything else without worry. I have not been disappointed since. I like boulder scrambling too. Hopefully I can give him at least a sense of wonder about nature. Give him the opportunity. What he does with it is up to him. Thanks again everyone. I have plenty of ideas now. Now I just have to do my research. Thanks again for getting me started.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

He is 16. Based on how much fun he had scrambling around at the base of the falls I'm hoping I can get him more interested with some of the spectacular views in Yosemite.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Wow, I knew I'd get some ideas from people here, but I never thought I'd get so many great ideas. Thanks a lot. Now I have some research to do. Anyone have a few pictures handy of some of these routes? I'll look through what's already been posted here before. but if you have it handy that would be great. I looking for an easy backpacking trip in Yosemite that is also scenic. I need it to have as little elevation gain as possible, especially steep gain. Something like the mist trail from the bridge to Nevada Falls is definitely out. Small inclines are not too bad, but I also need to keep the daily mileage minimal (trying for no more than 5 miles per day). Additionally I want spectacular scby Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I asked about leaving my equipment in LYV before making the trip (on another forum). Several people, and i think Bill-e-g was one of them, said it was okay to leave them there while hiking half dome. But then all my equipment is cheap.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I left my tent, packs and bear canister in LYV when we hiked to Half Dome (and back). There had been a bear in the CG the night before. No problems from either the 2 or 4 legged creatures. This was in 2010.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I climbed Half Dome the first year of the permits on a weekday. We went up the cables around 1:00 pm and it was crowded. For 3/4 of the way up it was move to the next post when the person in front of you moved and wait. The wait was 30-60 seconds or so at each post. I didn't really mind as I had planned all day for the hike. We did hang out on top till around 4:000 pm or so, to avoid the croby Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The problem with the JPEG compression scheme is that it allows data to be lost. You can typically control how much, but the compression scheme will loose data. The compression schemes used in TIFF (and most other) image formats does not allow data loss. JPEG is only useful when extreme compression is desirable.by Hitech - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
