Where to start?? Soooo very many wonderful trips over the past few years! So much fun. So much laughter and joy on the trail! You have become a dear friend and I value the time you spend with Basilbop and me out there in the mountains we all love! Thank you so much for all the encouragement, tips, tricks, jokes, pranks, TV Time, games, food, you-name-it! It's been a blastby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Uh oh! More trail for Yosemite Trail Quest! Shucky darn... gotta hike more in Yosemite...by JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotescl94556 Thanks for the timely news. I will be staying at Half Dome Village late next week. Do you whether it is possible to hike up to Nevada Falls without microspikes or the like? How about other trails out of the valley like Yosemite Falls? Thanks again. Hm. Brings up point of interest from this past weekend.. saw a sandwich board sign at beginning of Bridalveil Falls path from parkby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I would say if you have to refer to the cabins, then yes--with bath- are closer, but frankly that seems to confuse matters for the tree we are referring to. Across the creek east from Tamarack is the one we meant. If there is another further down the creek, we will have to go find it!by JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I haven't done the entire road in years.. I believe Chick-on said the deadfall had gotten worse in the section between Cascade creek and Rainbow View over time. That was annoying enough.. The concern is it may have gotten even worse over the past few months, based on what we have seen in the area. And seeing the way Fireplace Bluffs falls was going... I've been wondering how that sectiby JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Depending on how things melt out... we have also been discussing whether or not the camps would open at all this year... not sure how much trouble clearing the trails for resupply stock trains will be either given the treefall and debris we have seen in other areas. Best to try for it, but have backup plans...by JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quoteitchbay I was just informed that I misunderstood his proposed trip. He wants to actually sign up with the HSC, so we'd only be hauling our water and lunch/snacks food. The idea being since we don't have to buy packs and gear (we have a band-new, still-with-tags backpacker tent from our wedding a coupe of years ago, but that's for another trip I guess) it'll be a good half-step toward becby JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I'd start with Giant Forest and Crystal Cave. Though if you've seen caves before, I'd spend more time with the big trees, depending on how much time you have. Hm. Panoramic Point above the Grant Village area might be a nice treat too! Grant Grove main loop is lovely walk all could enjoy. So much goodness!by JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quoteplawrence Quotechick-on Quoteplawrence Isn't there one also at the Lodge that you can boop? There's none at the Lodge. It's on the road (just west of) to Superintendents Cabin (Residence 1 ?) ... We were told there were 2 near the Chapel. We only found one. The guy who told us wasn't at the desk so we couldn't find out any more info. There's 4 at the old village site .. across froby JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Carrying a pack and going downhill... if you haven't done it... you may be surprised with how you feel. Adding 20-30 pounds on your back... I'm with Chick-on.. break yourself in gently. Have a great win. Build up! There's a lot to dial in with backpacking, enjoy the whole process transitioning from dayhikes to overnight!by JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I could barely see myself in the pic! Uh yah. Rockslides not a good idea with a full pack at all, imo. I won't do. Not for a while, anyway. Maybe never. That new slide area, on top of the minor changes to the old stuff. And the old stuff isn't easy with pack either. I wasn't carrying anything and I didn't want to continue. Is that the old road which goes past Artist's Point, down to Bridalveil Falls area? I recall trees down on it when I did with you a bit ago.. but yikes.. looks like a heck of a slide zone.by JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Since it sounds like you missed one that you did actually look for... I feel that that particular one should count for 10 billion.. and it's been Boop'd by us already.. so... ...you're down 14 billion! WIN!by JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuotePineCone Quotechick-on curry village pizza squirrel Hmm, I looked in my Peterson Field Guide to Mammals of North America, and I can't find that genus of squirrel listed in there. I can't find the pink Yosemite Chick-on in the Sibley Birds West, but it seems to keep popping up in unconfirmed reports.. hm... if we could only track and capture the elusive avian!by JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotebasilbop Among the caveats: - There is no signage at the trailhead, and it's not on many modern maps. But there are a lot of TRs on this site that should have enough info. - Rockslides is not a maintained trail, but it is an old road (confusingly, it is the Old Big Oak Flat Road...) - It requires crossing several large rockslides, including a ~200' climb up similar rock. - Once you geby JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotelschaaf Love the trip report. I'm looking forward to the higher elevation trip reports as the weather warms. I'm looking forward to getting back up there... But.. we really want to get the lower elevation trails done as soon as we can, given weather, because... poison oak!!! Ugh... That said, we are planning on hitting 9k' early April.. but logistics... lots of variables. Wish uby JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteKevinD Great photos! Thanks for the share. Glad to see there's still some snow up there. By the way, I have to ask about the gaiters...the white ones, are they trash bags?? or something like cuben fiber or whatever they call it?? -Kevin Good old Tyvek. Housewrap weight. I must say, I prefer being in the snow this time of year. My allergies at home (Bay Area) are insane-making right now.. the meds are making me a bit wonky to boot! Anyway, this trip was fabulous! But I will say before we started, the guys were fussing about how heavy their packs were... So I got out the luggage scale. Suffice to say mine was the heaviest. By 4 pounds over the pink one! And Basby JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Possibly because of the concern about the reports of insane PO.. steep trail... and what we have encountered on other trails with fewer warnings... I found I was enchanted with this trip! I was also pleased I was able to handle the work, because this turned out to be the biggest single-day climb this year, and I really wasn't sure about it starting out... It was work, but it was gorgeous! I aby JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
If you have a wilderness permit and the road is open, you can use the trailhead. We have often driven up, picked up our permit (what you have is a reservation, so you still need to go to a permit office and GET the real permit), and then continued driving to the trailhead and hiked in. The issue/problem will be where you will stay before the date you enter the wilderness. Plan for some optby JustKeepWalking - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuotePineCone Quotechick-on Don't have a picture... but found out someone stole the sign on March 1st. Do you mean the actual NPS wooden sign itself?! That's terrible, and along with the Ahwahnee sign that was stolen last year as well, who are these losers that would stoop so low? Yup. When we drove in last week Thursday morning, it wasn't there. Quotechick-on You mean "north rim" What came first, the doodles or the snow? IIRC, doodles first.. then snow... but the snow wasn't payback.. (at least knowingly)... To be fair (sorry, Bearproof) "North Rim Traverse" means something specific to many. Whereas "north rim" hiking is more open and requires clarification. And then there is definition of "maintained" trail. I don't think I agree with them for a lot of what we have seen in the lower elevations.. and I sure don't like how they are maintaining the alpine trails with the sharp, rolling, ankle-twister rocks... grrr But what amazing country...
