QuoteParis92 Still no rangers at Tuolumne? Wow. I don't think it is very surprising at all. The Tioga Road was open this weekend and likely to open up again this week or weekend. As such there is not much to report. Not much snow up there, ski hut not open, etc.by buster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I haven't been up the south side incline. Just seems difficult to get to and then a lot of bushwhacking. Just hasn't appealed to me. Have wanted to go down from Yosemite West but never got around to it. I think it would be hard to follow the incline as you can barely make it out, though when there is snow the contrast makes it easier to see. Maybe I can get a picture of it this weekend. Quotewherever 2)What is the dashed line shown on the modern map below? I have highlighted it with some red Xs. It starts at the fire road between Yosemite West to Pinoche Peak. Is it a fire break? It goes straight down the hill! I believe it is an old trail but I think it is almost completely grown over. It seems odd to me that to relieve congestion at a choke point, one would want to add to it by expanding the intersection by having cars going in & out a parking lot. Plus, I imagine the parking lot would be relatively small, so there wouldn't be enough parking available for all the visitors wanting to go there, leading to a queuing of cars, which would slow traffic further.by buster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. What about the fancy mansion sized bathroom? How could one go without it there? Though I find it interesting that as people are advocating having a parking lot there others are advocating to remove roadside parking 200 yards down the road as it causes traffic back-ups.by buster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. QuoteFrank Furter I find it interesting that rather than visitation going through the roof, it has been remarkably stable at about 4 million per year since 1996. Not quite so. Here is the park visitation stats from 1990 to 2010. As you can see park visitation dropped 700,000 below 4 million in 2004, so that is a considerable swing, 20% or so: 2010 3,901,408 2009 3,737,472 2008 3,431,514by buster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Oh, it was just the white thorn bushes right at that corner of trail that had completely overgrown the trail. Couldn't even see the cut logs, or really any logs for that matter, that usually help me indicate where the trail was. Nature Valley (the granola bar company) is apparently sponsoring an effort to make a street-view style tour of trails of National Parks available. As long as the events do not have priority over the educational operations I don't see the issue. The money is going to Nature Bridge which will support the program in general. NopeSo why close Mist or 4 mile? It does seem to be a selective enforcement. They close the mist & 4 mile on a seasonal basis, ie they close it from Fall to late Spring rather than on a daily or hourly basis. They actually do the same for Half Dome, when they put up and take down the cables. So there is no selective enforcement it is actually rather consistent.by buster - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada.
