Here are a few more things from day hikes from last week. Big Pine Second Falls Big Pine Creek South Fork trail. Headed up into Little Slide Canyon from the Barney Lake trail at Twin Lakes. I didn't head up the steep talus slope. I'll probably go down from the top of the canyon sometime, or come down Little Slide as part of a loop. It was about 70 degrees during the day, but it got into the 30's at night. There was ice on the tent in the morning.by yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I had wondered about the permit for Secret Pass into Yosemite, because that permit is not on the Inyo website. Thanks to Z Old Dude for info about that permit. I picked up the permit at the Mono Basin Visitors Center. They let me pick up the walk-in permit before 11am the day before, because it was a non-quota trail head. The Ranger said that a lot of people can't find Secret Pass, but I knewby yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I've been wanting to go to Fourth Recess Lake for a long time. Thanks for posting.by yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for researching this Mike. Sounds like they conveniently let you pick up the Inyo permit at the TM station. I had wondered about that for awhile. Thanks for clearing it up.by yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
You don't need an Inyo Wilderness Permit for entering Saddlebag? http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wildpermits.htm If your starting trailhead is outside Yosemite National Park, get your permit from the land agency that manages that trailhead. Missed him by a day. I asked the dragonflies if they had seen a parrot, but they weren't sure.by yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Headed up to Bishop again for the 4th of July weekend. I was with someone who was recovering from an ankle injury, so we just did a few short day hikes. Did a quick trip into Yosemite. Mosquitoes weren't too bad at Lower Cathedral Lake, but there were a lot of dragonflies. Headed up Medicott Dome??? I always get confused what is actually Medicott Dome. I like to think of the whole thingby yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Mosquitoes weren't too bad when I was up there. Talked to someone that just got back from Dusy Basin, and they said mosquitoes are really bad right now.by yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
The last few years I have found myself racing to the Sierra in early June, before all the snow is gone. Seems like such a long time ago, when they would try to get the Road to Devils Postpile opened by the 4th of July weekend.by yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I was looking across to Roosevelt Lake from Ragged Peak Pass 2 weeks ago. Cool to see Roosevelt from the shoreline. Great views of Ragged Peak from over there.by yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

My last few reports have gotten about as much response as posts that ask for area conditions and get no reply. I'll give this one more try. Seeing all the backpacking reports here, motivated me to get back in the game. The line between day hikes and backpacking can be a bit blurry. I have done 20 mile day hikes, with x country travel. I have used a headlamp, and returned as the sky begins tby yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I meant to put this in the Hiking Forum, if someone can move it. (Done) Was up around Tuolumne about a week and a half ago. Headed up the Lake Mildred outlet. Basically followed the outlet, but crossed it several times looking for the path of least resistance. Some cool cascades and views of Half Dome, Clouds Rest and Mount Hoffmann. Headed over to Middle Sunrise Lake from just belby yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

It is hard to escape talk and images of the dry Sierra. I figured the best way was to get to the higher altitudes, and get a spring-like (or at least early summer) experience. Headed to Sequoia. I had heard that poppy blooms were pretty good a week earlier in the Sequoia foothills. Three Rivers was 85 degrees and the hills were brown when I arrived. I think the heat did a number on the poppiby yosemitejim - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
