As I said, more to come eventually. Near the creek crossing (around the 4600-foot level, between the "Bottom" and "Long" series of switchbacks) I noticed a white rock on the edge of the trail that I thought would be visible from Columbia Rock: Sure enough. QuoteModesto Bee YOSEMITE -- A 19-year-old from Sacramento visiting Yosemite National park with a church group was swept over Vernal Fall Saturday afternoon, authorities said. As KC said, everyone's feet are different. The last few years I've been hiking more and having some interesting foot problems -- like, shoes that were perfectly comfortable 2 years earlier when I bought them, feel too small after a day's hiking and the Brannock says I need a bigger size now. It looks as if my feet have been getting wider/longer and I need more arch support than I used to. Theby gophersnake - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

One thing to keep in mind is that a pound of dry ice is going to turn into a lot of carbon dioxide gas. It's not the kind of thing you'd want to keep in a closed car, or maybe even a tent, where you're going to be spending a lot of time. The REI Weekend Cooler seems to work well for me. When I'm staying at a hostel I use it just for transporting my cold stuff in the car. When I'm car camping, I stick it in the bear box and add up to half of a (7- or 8-lb.) bag of ice. So far I've always found other campers nearby to split the bag of ice with. My "Four Mile Trail" project is actually several projects in one. At first it was only about coming up with a more accurate plot of the trail than the USGS topo maps showed. Later I expanded it to include pictures of all the switchbacks. Still later, I noticed that I could get a good view of the area from Columbia Rock. Well, I did ask at the Wilderness Center this week. The only kind of permit they knew about was to climb Half Dome. They predicted that without one of those, the ranger at the foot of the Subdome wouldn't let me any closer. When were you thinking of going? As far as I know, the El Cap shuttle won't start running for another few weeks*. I was in the valley this week and saw no sign of it. Thanks for that Rockfall Hazard and Risk Assessment link. I've saved a copy and printed some of the maps and diagrams for my notes. In 2012, a few days after Labor Day, I noticed a crew with backpack sprayers working their way up Yosemite Valley between the Merced River and Northside Drive. In that case it would make sense for the park to require permits 365 days a year but only issue them when the cables were going to be up. Exception: technical climbing well away from the cables. Quotechick-onSection that you said has 35 (looks about right) There's something I've noticed in that section that I wanted to run by you. I've never owned a GPS. A year ago I started shopping for one but decided it wouldn't be worth it for me. -- There didn't seem to be any such thing as an all-around GPS. QuoteEnnyWas for the upper fall the angle of the sun towards the waterfall and water fall angle important? I'm asking because the sun was perpendicular to the waterfall.
