Hello Folks! This weekend I will be going out to Nelson Lake for the first time I had a few questions regarding the trip. 1) What are the chances of the TM BP site filling up Friday night? My permit is for Saturday so I will be leaving from San Diego after work 2) Can't seem to find overnight parking near the Elizabeth Lake TH so would I just park at the TM Wilderness Office or Visitoby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
absolutely stunning photos!!! Great trip report!! Can't say I'd like to do 20 miles the first day! Also how difficult is it to get a permit for Twin Lakes? -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quoteabetterpitchfork I'm going up on Saturday for my first off-trail hike! Wherever's latest post on Mount Watkins inspired me--hope I don't get too lost. Have fun at Kibbie! Very nice! Hope you have a blast! When are you getting off the trail? Thinking about heading over to the Tuolumne grill on sunday if anyone wants to join.by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Regarding mosquitos on your trip, would you say they would be bearable without the wind at echo? Sorry for the off topic question but do you happen to know what the walk-in quota is for Nelson Lake? I usually always am able to reserve it but it seems all the permits for this saturday have been taken!by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey Folks! I'll be up at Kibbie this weekend if anyone wants to join! Hope to see you guys on the trail! Happy hiking! Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I see they posted pick up sites for Valley--> TM but what about the opposite direction?by KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hey Folks, I got a permit for May Lake for July 11th and was planning on doing the Mystery trail and head north to Tuolumne Peak for the night. Next day return to TH. Is there any nice campsites you'd recommend in this area? Thanks! Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Wow! Looks like you guys had a blast! Never considered doing the Lukens Lake to May Lake idea. Is it worth doing the Lukens part or could one skip it and start at the ten lakes th? Was going to go south this weekend towards eagle peak from lukens lake but might just change my mind!by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey folks, Probably not a wise idea but I was trying to get out of the house July 4th weekend and was considering doing emigrant or Rancheria falls. How are the mosquitos this time around? Dry year so hoping it's not too bad. Was in the valley in April and they were starting to come out in full force. Thanks! Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Looks like you had a great trip! Great pics! -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yea might just consider sending me clothes in to insect shield. About 10 a garment I thinkby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey folks, Was just wondering how long permethrin lasts. According to the sawyer product, there's can last for 6 weeks but does that mean 6 weeks on the trail or just 6 weeks from application? Would hate to have buy another bottle and reapply so soon! Not cheap for an entire family! Thanks! Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quick question regarding Kibbie Lake and Hetch Hetchy. How are the conditions there during the July time? Might have some weekends open during July and would like to do some overnighters. Was considering trying to get a walk up for Clouds Rest/Sunrise Lakes or May Lake as an alternative. How difficult are the walk ups for those two? Thanks! Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotebasilbop I mean the Emigrant Wilderness. It's what would be the Shingle Springs (Kibbie Lake/Trail) trailhead in summer, except in winter you have to start from the dam. Lake Eleanor and Kibbie Lake make good destinations, as does some of the lower-elevation terrain north of Hetch Hetchy. It all depends on how much snow there is, and that can change significantly from one week to theby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotebasilbop March next year? It really depends on how much snow we get next winter. In a normal to wet year you may have 100% snow coverage from near Clouds Rest all the way to May. (In even normal years May Lake can have several feet of snow where the High Sierra Camp is into June...) You may be fine with that, but if you want to avoid snow, there are lower-elevation options: Hetch Hetchy,by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey Folks! Was looking at my calendar for next year and it seems that I'll only be open for any sorts of backpacking in late March. Bummer since Tioga won't be open so was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for a trip around that time of the year? I did Happy Isles--> LYV --> and went up the Merced river for a bit this year during march and enjoyed it. Was thinking of doing Hapby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteJustKeepWalking Thanks! Yah, I was very glad we were able to continue the trip! It turned out to be so memorable in so many ways. Just glorious. Glad you guys had fun! I hope to get out to yosemite more often (seki is my main area) and meet up with some of you nice folks! Happy Hiking! Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Jeez! I'm glad you weren't seriously hurt. Also glad you still got to enjoy your trip! -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Wow looks like you guys had a blast! Great photos! Which trail is this? I spent my memorial day weekend at Rae Lakes. Getting snowed on was fun! -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
QuoteDave I wish they'd make up their mind! Indeed! I know 2 weeks ago and on the 15th there was snow but is it still snowing out there? Was at gp on the 7th and most of the snow was melted by than.by KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Did a little more research and talked to a few folks from the High Sierra site. Hoping the conditions improved over the next week (forecast doesn't look too good). Will definitely be getting some ice axes and practicing. I feel a little bit better knowing the south side doesnt have snow as I will be doing the trail ccw. Descending the north side though....hmmmmby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Shot will probably rent crampons. might consider an ice axe . Trekking poles might Not workby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey Folks, While this isn't Yosemite related, I was hoping to get your help on hiking in snow (Rae Lakes/Glen Pass). According to the NPS, the north face of Glen Pass still has a few feet of snow and is doable via postholing. Now considering the trail isn't visible and that I've never hiked in snow before, would be safe to step IN or around previously traveled areas/postholes to make life easiby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hah yea I guess I'm worrying too much. Been scared of bears since I ran into one in Alaska when I was young. Thanks for the advice! Hopefully I'll see you folks out there sometime! By the way check on, your picasa album is full of great shots! Makes me want to do a overnighter this weekend. -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotebalzaccom We're with Marksor. We make sure everything is clean, then leave the "kitchen" (stove, pot, cups, etc) on a rock away from our tent...and not necessarily near our bear can. What about fuel? I intend to keep it in my sleeping bag or pack to keep it warm for early morning use. thanks! Appreciate the help! -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I'm reading through the NaviComputer info and it seems you have to modify the XML files of the downloaded maps. Is this correct? Thanks! Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotebasilbop QuoteKevinD Hmmm I'm very interested in this. Where do you guys download maps? Both maaloo and NaviComputer can be configured to download maps from caltopo, which has many different map sources in Google tile/web format. You'll have to enter the map sources manually, but they are not that complicated--I can post links to my map source files--and some pre-built maps (it's all pubby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotebasilbop QuoteJRinGeorgia QuoteparkloverOtherwise, my son has requested his own GPS so that is another idea. 20% off not valid on GPS units =( There are some rebates available though... For an inexpensive GPS option, the GoPhone Lumia 520 or Lumia 635 can't be beat--they are $40-$50, but you'll want to add a SD card to hold maps (or music or videos...) and download a mapping program (by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I drove up friday last week from SD and got a site around 10am. Might be the same this week -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey Folks! I tried FBC and decided it wasn't for me so now I plan on doing dehydrated one pot meals. Even with a nice wipe down/cleaning, would you recommend leaving the pot/pan in a bear can? I've heard some folks just leave it up upright at night on top of the bear can. Something about bears noticing there's no food so they give up? Also would you have any recommendations on a aluminum pot/pby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
