How long does permethrin last?
June 13, 2015 10:46PM
Hey folks,

Was just wondering how long permethrin lasts. According to the sawyer product, there's can last for 6 weeks but does that mean 6 weeks on the trail or just 6 weeks from application?

Would hate to have buy another bottle and reapply so soon! Not cheap for an entire family!

Thanks!
Kevin

Although this website https://sawyer.com/products/permethrin-premium-insect-repellent/ says 6 weeks, up to 6 washings or 42 days in the sun, I am wondering if it is 6 weeks from application because once you apply it the chemical will start breaking down and eventually will not work since the 1/2 life is 39 days.

Edit again: Out of curiosity, I started looking around more and can't find a real direct answer on that since one source said if your store the clothes your treated in a bag and with factory treated clothes, it lasts longer. Sorry if I am making you even more confused because now I am.

Which is why I just bite the bullet and purchase garments with Insect-Shield treatment because the effectiveness is rated at 70 launderings. Yes the garments cost more, but for me the long lasting effectiveness is worth the extra cost to avoid having to spend time and apply permethrin to my clothing manually so often.

I agree with you. I don't want to mess around with chemicals, did that enough at work, and would rather spend the extra on buying clothes already treated. I am going to buy some UV insect shield buffs for our trip to the Rockies.
