yep, when i had an analog cell phone, i could use in the Valley all the time. in fact, once when i was a top of Nevada Falls, i called home and it was clear as a bell.by forrestranger - General Discussion
i have an cell phone that is about 3 yrs old (motorola) with Cingular (now AT&T)... i go to Yosemite frequently.... up until about a year ago, i couldn't get reception at all in the Valley, but now i do... but once i leave the valley, i can't get reception until i'm at the top of Old Priest Grade Road (hwy 120)...by forrestranger - General Discussion
my son recently hit a deer in his van, it did a lot of damage, but was repairable. he did tell me that as he hit it, it's eyes met his as it was coming towards him, he thought that to be weird. lol now that this had happened, any time he see's a sign about deer warnings, he takes them serious and slows way down.by forrestranger - General Discussion

having driven around the valley park a few times recently, i couldn't help but notice how some old campsite areas were shut down (from years ago). it's a shame that they did that. to restrict the amount of campsites as it is, is terrible imo. the areas aren't even really being used productively. and another gripe i have (lol).... Yosemite Falls..... remember how there used to be a parking lot thby forrestranger - General Discussion
my son took this photo of a brown bear about 5 miles short of Yosemite Valley coming in from the Hwy 120 entrance. cars were parked along the road to check it out, we had a nice zoom lens so we could stay far away. i took this photo of a few climbers that were about half way up El Capitan. this was at Glacier Point towards the evening. so was this.by forrestranger - General Discussion
as my adult son and i were coming out of Glacier Point at about 9:45pm friday night (about 10 miles towards the valley), a park ranger had his lights on and had stopped all traffic.. he came up to my window and asked me where i was coming from, i told him Glacier Point. he asked me if i had been hiking at all and i told him no, that we only went to Glacier Point. he asked me a second time.... i aby forrestranger - General Discussion
is that the Chevron one?by forrestranger - General Discussion
spent the night on friday 8/17/07 and came home sat (today 8/18/07). talk about dried up. Yosemite Falls is totally dry, the only thing wet in the valley is Bridalveil Falls, and that is barely a trickle. the river is fine, in fact i took a swim in it this afternoon, cold but refreshing. it wasn't that crowded, but normal for a saturday. perfect weather! watched a number of climbers on El Caby forrestranger - General Discussion
wow! (not good).... that is sad to hear. there sure seems to be a lot of incidents this year (people dying, missing etc).by forrestranger - General Discussion
i just learned that this same man who died in Yosemite, was also rescued recently (within the last couple of years i believe) on Mt. Hood in Oregon during the winter (in the snow).by forrestranger - General Discussion
thank you eeek; yep, that was him... i just asked my wife if that was his name and she said yes. Post Edited (07-21-07 14:24)by forrestranger - General Discussion
my wife was telling me that a co-worker of hers (her husband) had a heart attack on Half Dome last wednesday (7/11/07?) and died. he was with his son (who is in his early 20's).. she wasn't sure exactly where it happened, either during the climb or on top. has anyone seen any reports of this? he was 53 yrs old, in good shape etc, so it was a real shock. there are areas where you'll probably have to get out of the raft and carry it (depending on how far you float, and where at), but i saw numerous people in rafts and inner tubes.. IMO, inner tubes are the way to go.by forrestranger - General Discussion
i was there yesterday (7-15-07) and in Yosemite Valley, there were lots of people in rafts floating down the river.. i was swimming it myself. the waterfalls were almost at a dribble though. Upper Yosemite Falls wasn't much to brag about, the only fall that i saw that was still going pretty good was Nevada Falls (viewing it from Glacier Point).by forrestranger - General Discussion
all the kid would have to have is a stick of gum in his mouth, or even flavored Chapstick, and the bear would have entered.by forrestranger - General Discussion
i was surprised to hear of a black bear killing a human too... i just saw it on the news just now... the bear took the kid right out of his tent at 11pm. unreal! they said the bears are very hungry this year because of the lack of food...by forrestranger - General Discussion
i climbed it many years ago... i had no idea what i was getting into at the time, i too went with a church group... when i got there, i was shocked at how steep it was... had i not had friends encouraging me to climb it, i doubt i would have on my own. i saw people "running" up and DOWN on the outside of the railings! i was thinking at how stupid they were putting their lives at risk lby forrestranger - General Discussion
a small air horn is what i carry in my fanny pack on day hikes.by forrestranger - General Discussion
cool! nice to see these older photos.by forrestranger - General Discussion
i have a couple of friends who wanted me to ask this group if there were places in Yosemite where they can ride their own horses. not to camp, but just day riding.by forrestranger - General Discussion

sorry if this isn't allowed, if it isn't allowed , please delete it, i do NOT want to post anything i'm not suppose to. anyhoo, for anyone interested, there is a new site you can join that is all about backpacking / car camping / hiking / climbing / biking / RV'ing etc. it's brand new (not my site, i only joined it), looks like it could be a lot of fun in addition to this great site. httby forrestranger - General Discussion
Horsetail Falls in February / a top of El Capitan Post Edited (05-25-07 01:02)by forrestranger - General Discussion
yep, more than likely... i see too many people horsing around like that all the time. years ago while at the top of Vernal Falls, i saw a guy hanging over the railing right next to the falls thinking he was funny. one slip and he waould have been a goner. the guy was totally hanging from the lowest piece of the railing, dangling his whole body over the falls... what an idiot!by forrestranger - General Discussion
good article... makes sense to me.by forrestranger - General Discussion
when i go there, i bring my own tire tinner tubes and float down the river with those. be VERY careful.. a few years ago i did this with my kids and almost lost one of them (he was about 12 yrs old at the time).. in some places the water is very fast... it doesn't have to be deep at all.. at one point, we had a hard time crossing the river in 1 foot of water because it was so fast. always!!!! wby forrestranger - General Discussion
i ended up going today. lol my wife wanted to go at the last minute.. below is a link of 3 new photos i took today (the others are from the week before). you'll see mother and cub bear in the valley near the river not far at all from the meadow from El Capitan. this was the first time i had seen a bear there in about 12 years. the last one is a photo of two climbers, there was a third, butby forrestranger - General Discussion
would you expect the valley to be busy or not on Mothers Day? i was thinking of going, but not if it's going to be super crowded.by forrestranger - General Discussion
