It felt slightly more exposed to me than Clouds Rest, but it's not nearly as bad as it looks in the video. The wifey stayed back (she's quite acrophobic), but I didn't think twice about it. Agree with others that the hike up is worth it regardless of whether or not everyone makes it up the summit block. QuoteJustKeepWalkingFriends of ours who really nudged us into backpacking years ago used to LOVE going to Ediza, regularly! And their stories of the goings-on back in the 70s at the lake... wow... I can only imagine. Glad you enjoyed the pics. I'll have to do the bigger loop next time.by redpakotasea - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
^I appreciate your rambling. :-) I think you two have mastered the art of trip reporting. All of these posts are great. Keep 'em coming.by redpakotasea - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Awesome photos! Haven't made it over Benson Pass yet, but had a great trip out of Twin Lakes last year. Skies are nice and dark out there, ideal for Milky Way shots. :-)by redpakotasea - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Our group of 6 spent 3 nights backpacking in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, visiting a series of subalpine lakes at the foot of the Ritter range, an imposing volcanic subrange of the Sierra Nevada. We camped at Ediza, Garnet, and Thousand Island Lakes, which must be some of the most scenic lakes in the Sierra, easily accessed from Agnew Meadows in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Awesome! I'll be doing a 3-nighter through this area in early August, except we'll be heading in via Shadow Creek to Ediza, followed by 1000 Island, and out via High Trail. I was thinking of spending 2 nights at Ediza and 1 at 1000 Island, but not sure about details or day hikes. Would you recommend doing otherwise? Thanks.by redpakotasea - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Wife and I had a great Fourth of July weekend in Yosemite. We hiked in from Cathedral Lakes trail head, camping at Cathedral Lakes and then on Clouds Rest (about 0.2 mi from summit), and hiking out via Sunrise Lakes trail head. I came prepared with mosquito hats and the expectation of icy cold lakes, but it's more like August up there. We spent all afternoon at Lower Cathedral without a bite, sanby redpakotasea - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
They were virtually nonexistant on July 4th, except for a minor assault around sunset. I spent all afternoon lakeside without a bite...and no DEET. And the water is warmer than expected too...cool, but swimmable (probably around 70 deg). Lower Sunrise Lake was even warmer. Pictures coming.by redpakotasea - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Mosquitoes in late June, 2012, at Young Lakes...and we camped in dry area a good 500 ft from the water. They weren't bad at all at TM, but I think we must have hit the peak hatch at 10,000 ft. It's probably not worth entirely planning your trip around mosquitoes since they vary year to year and by elevation at any given time. Bloodsuckers waiting for us to leave the tent. Hey folks. I'm finally getting back to Yosemite for a short trip in early July with a Cathedral Lakes trailhead permit. I have two nights. I know it will probably be quite buggy around the lakes, so I'm hoping for camping suggestions. I'm planning on spending the second night on the shoulder of Clouds Rest and then hiking out via Sunrise, catching a shuttle back to Tuolumne Meadows. Fortunately,by redpakotasea - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Don't despair. Most of this data was collected before or at least between recent storms. My guess is that the higher parts of Tuolumne drainage have gotten a few feet of snow since the measurements were taken. http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/snow/COURSES Hey, at least the skeeters will be dried out earlier this year.by redpakotasea - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Here are some maps from our Hoover trip...doesn't add a whole lot since the route was on established trails and pretty self-explanatory, but thought I'd add it anyway (may even confuse things with the color overlays). It should be pretty easy to figure out where we camped (colors change)...and yes, we were over 100 ft from the water! Headed out from Robinson lakes trailhead in Mono Village for a 3 night backpacking trip in the Hoover wilderness (Wed-Sat). Camped at Barney, Crown, and Peeler lakes, respectively. On day 2, after hiking from Barney to Crown, my wife and I day hiked up to Mule Pass, and were treated to spectacular views with clouds building over the sierra crest. ^Thanks. QuoteFrankDo you take a variety of different long exposures and hope to get one that is good. Pretty much...the focus is tough to get right with night shots. There are some necessities: low noise, high iso camera (mine is an old Canon 5D...see dxomark.com for comparisons...full frame cameras fare better in low light) and a lens with a wide aperture (f/1.4 is ideal). Thought I'd post an update with some photos of my trip...spent the 17th and the 18th with the wifey at the Glacier Point Ski Hut. This was our second time cross-country skiing and the trip out was fairly easy (though the icy conditions resulted in a few bruises). It took us about 5 hours on the way out with a leisurely lunch and 30 minute stopover at Washburn point (roughly 3.5 hours on the wby redpakotasea - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
