My mother said she, her sister, dad and aunt all stayed in Yosemite for a week that year, first thing they did was go to Glacier Point to look around before finding their campsite below. I'm surprised at the lack of photos of the wood pile so lucky to have a rare picture! That night they then laid out on blankets to watch the Firefall. She said even then the meadow was a mess and she was happy to

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Found a box of my mom's slides from a road trip she made to the Sierra in 1956 when she was 14. This is Glacier Point with the Firefall coals pile. The two gals in the middle are my mother and her sister.

Eradicating any organism would have serious consequences for ecosystems — wouldn't it? Not when it comes to mosquitoes, finds Janet Fang.

General Discussion It is a counter. I ran across one on North Fork Lone Pine Creek (Mountaineer's route to Mt. Whitney). That one even had a screen to show the count (which at the time I saw it read 7). They work the same as game cams, might even take your picture

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Plugging in some sunset values into Stellarium for Yosemite Valley
Firefall (Horsetail Fall) date of Feb. 14, 2012, sunset at 17:31:47, sun sets at azimuth 253 degrees, 33 minutes 41 seconds
Backing up to Oct. 27, 2011, sunset at 18:01:29, sun sets at azimuth 253 degrees, 33 minutes, 17 seconds
So if it rains a lot or snows and then melts on Oct 27 and sun peeks out just before sunset, s

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Someone mentioned Half Dome's slope. I took this photo from LYV, measuring rise/run in pixels I came up with rise 604 run 787 which comes out to 76.7 percent slope (604/787) and 37.5 degrees (inv tangent 604/787)

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion While others turned back, Castillo pushed on up the park's iconic feature, making him one of Yosemite National Park's worst nightmares— the increasing number of wilderness neophytes who mistakenly think the government is obligated to save them.
Article from The Associated Press

General Discussion Shot this with the 500 mirror (it's a rather obscure Korean lens called "Prospec" ). The Belden's was about 8 feet away at Upper Soda Springs campground. You can see the bokeh in the background and the lack of depth of field. You are right about the handy switching of ISO. I had forgotten about it and was shooting flash pics inside the Standard Mill at Bodie, then remembered I could pus

Photography advice, critiques and tutorials I had something like that happen up at Horseshoe Meadow. I was in the smaller walk-in campground to the north and it was just my tent and one other, I was hanging out listening to XM just letting the day go by, then the occupants of the other site came back from a hike. They pulled out guitars and started jamming, I didn't mind too much because they actually played fairly well. But after about 30

General Discussion When I was a teen I was driving down a highway and a careless driver pulled out of a side road, hit the rear quarterpanel of my car and sent my car off the road, rolling sideways. I rolled maybe 5 seconds before landing upright in a ditch and I walked away unhurt. But during those five seconds I figured this was it, I was dead and I really did see my life flash before my eyes, little snippets of

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion LCD screens are flexible, some enterprising electronics geek should rig one up to play a video loop of a campfire. You just unroll the screen from its protective tube and prop it up with the tube or some sticks, backlight it with your headlamp and voila! Campfire, no fuss, no muss (and no heat )

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I use REI trekking poles, they are more useful downhill than up. I believe the REI brand is made by Komperdell.
Odd that they are not counting this sad death in the park totals for the year

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I think I've felt safer on the cables than I have at the edge of Emerald Pool during high flow. I've seen the book "Death in Yosemite" referred to a few times, I'm thinking the percentage of preventable deaths listed in the book has to be in the 90s, maybe high 90s. What's bad about yesterday's deaths is it appears two people died trying to help the first, another thing that was pointed

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Goldfinch says, "That's some mighty fine bokeh you got there."
Been having a lot of fun with a 500mm mirror the last couple months, the lens isn't sharp, it has zero depth of field (and thus very hard to focus), it is cheap ($50), it makes weird rings of light when out of focus (bokeh), but it also is light enough to put in a backpack and beats the heavy, long, expensive ($1,500)

Photography advice, critiques and tutorials Last I read, the Minaret Falls and Upper Soda campgrounds were closed because of heavy downed tree debris. I'll bet southern part of Minaret flooded, too. I'll be down there in a few days to see for myself, will try for a campground at Pumice Flat probably
