I love the TM grill for the basic burger and stuff, great to grab something and sit outside and take in the scenery.
What I REALLY love is the pie at the Tioga Pass Resort, about 15-20 minutes drive East of TM, about two miles outside the park. Take a drive out there and get some perspective on the Meadows, have a closer look at Mt. Dana and Tioga Lake, and grab a slice of some of the most

What kind of program do you use to produce this?
It's Topo!
National Geographic bought them out a few years back.
I guess it's this:

I keep my GPS on whenver I'm hiking....
I have NG TOPO, too - you can also view GPS tracks in Google Earth (free).
A GPS, window seat and maps also make airline travel fun!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion And a quick thought here - you can greatly improve images taken from jet planes by running a quick 'auto levels' (command-shift-L in Photoshop) or 'auto correct' command on images:
Nice job getting the shots and getting a window seat that wasn't over the wing and was on the Valley-facing side of the plane!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Here's a view of Half Dome from just before noon on Wednesday June 2. Flight path from the east provided a great vantage point, but a little farther north would have been better, as I could barely see the valley, and there's some sun glare and distortion from viewing through the very bottom of the window. Perhaps they don't want folks running around in the snow patch on top?

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Nice! Thanks for taking the time to get the video uploaded & shared, and good job getting the image.
Image quality from Quicktime (or for any movie file, really) is all about frame dimensions and kilobytes per second, the kbps you see if you display movie info (command-i on a mac) when a movie is playing. 2000-2500 or so is pretty good and not greatly discernable from 4000+, in my expe

OK. To stir up the pot again I have been to Hall Road in Turlock very recently and taped Half Dome from there. (Turlock)
If anybody wants a one minute DVD of the zoom in zoom out of Half Dome from Turlock let me know. I tried to upload it to youtube but the resulting quality was poor. PM me if you would like a copy to play on your very own TV. It's free.

Vdrummers idea of hiking in from mono meadow sounds good for a back up plan
I'm assuming this would increase the hiking distance? If so how much longer?
Mono Meadow to Nevada Fall is about 6.5, with modest elevation gain; that's about 3.5 miles more than going to Nevada Fall from Happy Isles.
Do you have Tom Harrison

any ideas on a back up plan? im sure that there is a high chance this permit will be taken...
You could hike to LYV from Mono Meadow trailhead, then exit at Glacier Point or down in the Valley. You'd have to count on hitchhiking back to the car if you leave it at Mono Meadow.

What I find interesting is that there is audio with the video. Rare in my experience.
Yesterday there were lots of audible bird noises (chirping, unlike sea birds) that sounded relatively close-by.
The hosting website has lots of other webcams that seem to function well.
There was definitely a dialog of some sort when the male visited the nest to drop off the fish earlier to

I can't tell from the video.
I caught a glimpse of it - it was definitely a fish. Yellowish-brown in color.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion 4. We are planning to hike Yosemite Falls, will we need snow shoes especially during the storm?
friends of mine (a group of 25 high school students plus adults) just hiked to the top of the falls on saturday 3/27 - they had no problems. didn't go to the bridge across the creek, but had no difficulties getting to the lookout right next to the falls.
5. Should I be worried about water leak

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Anyone know if the top of Yosemite Falls can be reached by hiking, without snowshoes, up the Yosemite Falls Trail?
I'm considering an excursion up the Yosemite Falls Trail next weekend.
The NPS Yosemite Condition web page (http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm) says all trails are open, and doesn't list the Yosemite Falls trail among the exceptions.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion There's a great 1964 study of how vegetation in Yosemite Valley has changed since 1850, a relatively short period of time overall, but incredibly full of changes to the natural plants and trees of the Valley. The study is titled "Influence of Modern Man on the Vegetation of Yosemite Valley", by Robert P. Gibbens and Harold F. Heady, published by the California Agricultural Experiment S

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I'm headed to Little Yosemite Valley via the Mono Meadow trailhead with my college age daughter on her first backpacking trip. We're planning to enjoy four days around the spectacular scenery of LYV, and for sure we expect to see many hikers on their way to Half Dome, etc. We're interested in finding a few spots that would avoid some of the crowds, like hiking to the top of Liberty Cap, maybe s

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion In July 2005 I backpacked Murphy Creek - Glen Aulin - Cathedral Lake - Sunrise - Happy Isles with one permit. I think I probably explained my entire route when I picked up my Wilderness Permit, but even if I didn't, there's no way to enter at Murphy Creek and exit at Happy Isles without crossing 120. Not requiring me to have two permits could have been an oversight I guess, or there could have

The Influence of Modern Man on the Vegetation of Yosemite Valley

- Crown Lake is off a bit... it's the lake just south of where you put it (which is Robinson)
You can see a large number of lakes... Sister, Doe, Smedberg, Miller, Tallulah, Murdock, Rodgers, Virginia...

Cool. Thanks for the aerial shots! Every time I'm flying I'm invariably on the wrong side of the plane!
I'm not Mike but those labels look pretty correct to me.
I'm gonna give them a really good look over when I have more time to burn.
Thanks again
