... and I owe the ranger lady for keeping the Marmuts away from my beloved Loch Tablae.
She dissuaded us from going there when it appeared that it would be necessary to stamp "BIG CLUCKS" on our Wilderness Permit in order to legitimately access the location.

QuoteplawrenceJust because a group of people like to call the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge not by its proper name, doesn't make that incorrect name correct.
Just because some people call it a lodge doesn't mean they are correct.
Presumably DNC decided that they could make more money by declaring it a lodge.
At least as recently as 1987, when the HSCs were run by the Curry Company

White Wolf does have several hard-sided cabins with private baths, though.
Those cabins predate the acquisition of the property by the park and the establishment of the White Wolf HSC.

True, but in this instance, they happen to be correct.
It would seem that the main requirement for a shed to be called a lodge is that it

I have the same site preference as you. This trip is actually a group of 8, two of which are staying in the HSC cabins so we'll probably end up staying nearby to be part of the group.
There is a nice tree-covered rise approx. 0.1 mile N of the trail at the E end of Fletcher Lake.

Yeah we'd mostly be using it for backpacking. I was concerned mostly w/rocky ground, etc. I haven't camped much in the Sierras (just yosemite a bit) and wasn't sure how often a person is forced to sleep on granite (unstakeable).
Also, yep, that's the tent
Generally, you'll find that condensation inside the tent (since it is single walled) is going to be much more of a problem th

I presume you're staying at the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge (since there's no Tuolumne Meadows HSC).
Technically, the Lodge is a HSC
Technically, the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge is no longer considered a High Sierra Camp, though once upon a time, it was.
Besides the differences that "Wherever" has already pointed out, other very impor

What about @ 0:19? Not enough of a beak I guess, but paint that section pink and it nearly becomes that unusual creature. Perhaps when in a state of bliss.

Oh yes, I've been checking those as well. And I am disappointed in the Death Valley temps. I was hoping for at least 120.
Phoenix is somewhat disappointing also:
Around this time, one can usually expect triple-digit temperatures around the clock.

I am traveling with my family of four from Chicago in August. We are flying into Phoenix, visiting the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, a night in Las Vegas, Death Valley, and most importantly, Yosemite.
FYI:

QuoteLA Times ArticleTwo of the bodies have yet to be found. After the accident, a makeshift memorial — a cross lashed together with yellow rope — was placed near the edge of the waterfall, just beyond the safety railing.
I hope someone has taken that down by now. If I wasn't halfway across the country I'd do it myself (if I didn't have to jump the railing and onto the polished g

By now I just meant that you better do it now.
I mean now that you asked about it you better do it now.
Now, you should do it.
Now what I mean?
(Ok, um... do it now means that you should do it)
(when you do it is up to you)
Now the chikin has given himself a headache... again.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion About two years ago, while approaching Bishop Pass from the Dusy Basin side, I was more than mildly surprised to see a hummingbird whiz past at around 11.5k.
A quick websearch later revealed that some species of these little guys* range up to 17k in the Andes.

So you're saying the next time we have a lightning started fire down here at 2500' where I live they should let it burn and destroy everyone's homes? That would be natural, right? The only difference between here and the current fire location is elevation.
Will it stop the whining about a little smoke?

Since it is identified as a mobile unit and is conveniently pointed toward the fire, it seems reasonable to surmise that it has been placed there for the duration of that activity.
