I decided to go with the Yosemite Bug. For the price and location for a room with a private bath and heat, I don't think it could be beat on such short notice. I've also heard good testimonials from some of you. Thank you so much to those of you that gave suggestions- you helped a ton!
Now I have to just pray for good weather.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion For my girlfriend, a private bath will be necessary, so Housekeeping Camp and Curry Village won't be possible. Looking further into Yosemite Bug it seems like a real option. They have a room for $85 that has a full bed and a private bath. That almost seems to be too good to be true for the price. Also, leaving Friday night isn't an option. We have late dinner plans with my brother (also live

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Either way my first day's drive will be long. I won't be going directly to the hotel from San Fran. The hotel will be nothing more than a place to sleep, take a shower, and get free "breakfast." If I spend any more than two hours there (in addition to sleep) then I will have wasted my time. So in other words, it'll be where we crash Saturday night after going directly to a trailhead

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Coming from San Fran. According to Google Maps the travel time from the hotel in Oakhurst to the Tioga Pass is actually longer than the travel time from the hotel in Sonora to the pass. Either way, it seems whether I stay in Oakhurst or in Sonora that I'll be driving further on one of the days. Each one is closer to some of the stuff I want to see and further from some of the stuff she wants t

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Right now I'm debating between Yosemite Lodge (depends on pricing, one of the members here informed me he was canceling a reservation and would let me know a time to call and snag it) and a place in either Oakhurst or Sonora. Prices in Oakhurst and Sonora are comparable, but obviously the locations are quite different. I'm leaning toward Sonora because the reviews for a Best Western Plus there

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I saw similar conditions when I was there in 2008. One minute I couldn't see anything beyond about ten to fifteen feet, the next minute I could see most of the valley and Half Dome in a beautiful shroud.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I know most of you probably camp when you come, and that's all I've done in years past as well, but I'll be going to Yosemite with my girlfriend on October 22-23 and will need somewhere to stay the night of Oct. 22nd near the park (I'm pretty certain everything within the park is booked) that's indoors. Any suggestions on places you've staid or heard about that weren't too terrible? The closer

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Well I bought my plane ticket yesterday, and I plan on being in Yosemite Oct 22nd and 23rd. If the colors have begun, great. If not, that's fine too. We can always go further east and up in elevation if need be. Maybe I'll see some of you guys/girls out there?

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion QuoteDavidSenesac
There are different tree and shrub species that contribute to the California fall color and each one has its own period of color change. There is some overlap with some species but not with others. Also change generally occurs first at higher colder elevations and progresses to lower warmer elevations. The two primary species of interest to photographers are quaking aspen tha

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I'll be in California from Oct 11th-18th and was planning on visiting Yosemite the weekend of the 15th and 16th. Will the autumn colors be starting in Yosemite by that point, or will I still be a few weeks early?

Makes me want to give serious consideration to replacing my 3/4-lb Katadyn water filter with hand sanitizer.
You can do that. Since I have personal knowledge of 10 verified cases of giardia and where they picked it up, I'll take the filter just the same.
Frankly, I have better things to do with my time and money than to suffer from any illness of any severi

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Intentional introduction of non-native species is worrisome. It's been done in the past with devastating results, so hopefully this time around they did their homework.

General Discussion Well I used it in 2007. I think if I was going to become symptomatic it would have happened by now :p
I realize it might have done absolutely nothing and my immune system just took care of it, or there were not high amounts of pathogenic monsters in the sample I took, but I was just stating that my limited experience with it has been positive.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion This is awesome news. At first I feared that the changes implemented would be too loose to cause any real change, but as long as these proposed changes are enforced they should really fix the bulk of the current issue.
Now as others said- time to do something similar for the Half Dome permits.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion The first time I went to Yosemite I had never even been there. Being about 13, and from Ohio, the only reason I went was due to being brought by my father and uncles. The first time I went, the first thing that caught my eye were El Cap and Half Dome. At that time I didn't even realize you were allowed, or able, to go to the top of them. Once I found out you could, I planned on doing it for y

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I was told the wildflowers in a few of the places I went while visiting would be beautiful. They were almost non-existent . I'm guessing there was too little sunshine and too much rain?
