Not all mountain lions flee.
The following attack on on six-year-old boy (hiking with a large group of adults) occurred in the same Santa Cruz Mountains as the study above about three years ago:

The study above has a flaw in thinking the mountain lions are afraid of humans at all times. The respons

General Discussion A Fresno Bee article about the two PCT-thru hikers and the general conditions of hiking up in the High Sierra while the rivers and creeks are running at very high levels.
“Clement also spoke to the father of a thru-hiker with little wilderness experience that insisted his son would be OK because he was carrying the proper gear.
“Gear doesn’t count this year,” Clement warned. “It

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – A 21-year-old man, Gervais Dylan Gatete from Raleigh, North Carolina, sustained severe burns after falling into a hot spring late on Tuesday, June 13. The incident occurred in the Lower Geyser Basin off of Fountain Flat Drive just north of the Old Faithful area. General Discussion What is the latest scientific prediction when Yellowstone caldera will erupt again? I think they predict it's a long ways off (more than 10,000 years). IIRC, the Long Valley caldera is predicted to have an volcanic eruption a lot sooner (within serval hundred years).

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I don't use Google URL shortener for any sort phishing or a security attack. The linked destination is the same: https://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/historyculture/degnans.htm
I used it here (as I sometimes do) only for the analytics (to gauge how interested others are in the link). It lets me know if people are interested in the link or not. That way I can save time by NOT posting links to sub

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion To honor the tradition of the Degnan family bakery, Yosemite Hospitality (Aramark) ought to start baking fresh bread again at Degnan's.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Fortunately for all of us, the Yosemite black bears have never developed a taste or desire for human flesh. What they went from us is only our possessions, especially those that smell nice to the bear. Maybe the bear that you encountered was hoping that you would ditch your daypack and flee. I'm glad that you didn't do that.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra If you encounter a bear, the first thing you should do is to make sure that there are no cubs nearby. If there are cubs near the mama bear, do not go towards the cubs or the mama bear and don't get in between the cubs and the mama bear. That's the most likely scenario where you might get the bear charging towards you.
If it's a solo bear, stand your ground and don't retreat (nor turn your ba

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion It's the same vendor: Yosemite Hospitality (AKA Aramark) that operates the High Sierra Camps in Yosemite and the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge.
According to Yosemite National Park (NPS) tweet, it was Yosemite Hospitality's decision not to open up the High Sierra Camps in Yosemite this year:

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra “At about 1,000 miles into my hike I was hiking alone in the Sierra Nevada Mountains when I came across a particularly treacherous river crossing. The flow was strong and the water was past my waist. As I was fording the river my footing gave way under a lose rock and I was swept into the current. I began rushing towards a waterfall and couldn’t swim out with my 60 lb pack on so I ditched the

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra I was being conservative about how fast you might be traveling down the highways. It's 200 miles of mostly windy roads. On U.S. 395 you should be able to average about 60 MPH. But on Highways 108, 49 and 120, it's very likely you might get stuck behind people driving only about 40 to 45 MPHs (and slower around sharp curves).

Sorry, me again.. ;-)
As I have to do my drive (from Mammoth Lakes to Rush Creek) next sunday, it seems still possible that Sonora pass will be open then (hopefully..), so just to be sure, if sonora is open, which directions would i have to take (which roads, etc)? And how long would it be? I just want to be sure that I would take the right roads.. if Sonora is an option.. thanks again

One note on my photo above: It's not obvious in the picture I posted, but the roundabout has only three legs. There's no fourth leg heading west into the trees. The map Troutwild posted above is more clear. To access the Lodge and park exits, you have to take the loop that wraps around the parking area.

It was interesting watching drivers trying to figure out how to use the round about Memorial Day weekend and this weekend. People just don't understand the merging thing. Yesterday for some reason they had all the entrances to the parking lot blocked off and there were empty spots. We drove that round about several times until they finally opened one of the entrances.
