Got up early to see the flooding Thursday morning...it was high but not higher than last year on the morning of June 7. (yeah, did the yellow tape mean that the bridge was closed??? )
No rafters but saw a few swimmers. We were under water on the bike trail (above my knees) so couldn't see where they got out at swinging bridge. One guy was wearing a water polo helmet.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I have some too but I can't post here unless I have them on a photo hosting site???
We hiked from Upper Pines to 4 Mile Trail then Panorama on June 7th. Needless to say our party of nine was much delayed on our early morning start, snapping photos of the flooding. The swinging bridge was closed, but, of course, we had to cross it. Water wasn't going over the bridge.
Hope to get some si

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion The road is only open to the pack station and isn't even open around Rock Creek Lake yet. Beyond the pack station, the road is about 75% snow covered.
But the restrooms at Mosquito Flat are open and one snow free campsite (backcountry permit holders only) available across the bridge.
Lots of snow beyond Mosquito Flat!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I will be happy if chick-on's forecast materializes. (It is forecasted to be in the 90*'s in Bishop next week and in Fresno also.)
I was at Tioga Pass on Friday and up at Mosquito Flat yesterday. Snow needs to start melting a little bit...

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I was there last year...I was going to say that I thought it was the 7th not the 6th of June for the peak...arrived in the valley on the 5th, the day Tioga opened. Bishop had quite a bit more heat at that time last year than is predicted next week (translating to warmer temps for snow melt...)

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Well here on the east side, we had a 6 week "january thaw." Some similar temps as here in Juneuary (70*'s.) This got the grasses growing early...maybe crowding out some of the flowers. Had very few blooms here and the poor flowers that did appear have been beaten by the wind.
We visited Carrizo Plain in April and there were tons of flowers, but they were flattened by snow. (Long

General Discussion Mammoth closed July 5 last year. Much more snow this year, but they will probably close on July 4 due to lack of interest not due to lack of snow. They officially received 1.5" more snow last night.
I've seen pics from a plane, from Friday, over the area. All I can say is...wow! June Mountain still even looks skiable...

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Blah, blah, blah...can you tell that I'm from Inyo County. The Inyo Supervisors are a bunch of wimps when it comes to dealing with the LADWP.
Where I live, we deal with the DWP every day...they turn the water down (raise gates that were installed on BLM land without a permit) of creek flow to our community and we go out and turn the water up...

General Discussion I can't help singing "Werewolves of London" when I pass by. Unfortunately I have some of my "singing" on video tape.
(Much like the song "What would you do with a drunken sailor" when I hike past Drunken Sailor Lake in Sabrina Basin. And they have taken the work "drunken" out of that lake's name on some maps...)

I remember the days when Tioga Road looked like that when first opened. After the plow operator was killed they became a lot more conservative.
It was like that in June of 1978...I worked in the valley and drove to the east side to be in line to be first to go over the pass. The snow absolutely dwarfed my little Subaru. The road at Olmsted was only one lane. Quite a surprise sinc

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Our local weather dude just said he doesn't see a change in the weather pattern for at least a week, maybe two. Look for another 6 " in the upper elevations Sun/Mon.
Never ending WIND here on the east side.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Was in the valley during the peak last year...our trip this year should be close...
Remembering 1983...backpacked to Litlle Yosemite Valley over Memorial Day weekend. 1/2 of Little Yosemite was under water/snow. The hike on the JMT just before getting to Nevada Falls was a real soaker. (Some of the creeks have been diverted since then.)

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Congrats theslipperyelm on your upcoming nuptials!
We got married in Yosemite June 2 27 years ago. Not on Glacier Point, but on our wedding day, we did get up at 4am and hike to Glacier Point to watch the hang gliders. We had a anniversary dinner for our 25th anniversary at Washburn Point.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion My husband and I did Glen Aulin/Waterwheel Falls in June of 2006. Spectacular! The next year, it was a lot drier, and my family camped in Tuolumne instead of the valley in June. We hiked to Glen Aulin and although I was disappointed with the water volume, my sis, her husband and three boys really enjoyed the walk along the Tuolumne and the falls. My nephews were a few years older than your so

BTW, I am frequently mistaken for a guy in person too. But only because I wear loose fitting clothing and short hair.
Ha, 25 years ago, when topping out on the Bear Ridge switchbacks, a lady said to her child..."Let the man pass." I was a little shocked. I had waist lenth hair in a braid and a bandana on, and my clothes were a bit more feminine

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Although we stay in the campground in an RV, we are amongst the folks who are clapping when a generator shuts down. We stay for a full week and don't need to run a generator.
A couple of loops at the Manzanita Lake campground in Lassen have generator free loops, as do other campgrounds there. That was nice last year, especially since my husband and I were tent camping, although the rest of

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Don't forget the miles of paved bike trails.
When the handicapped campsites and pathways to restrooms were being constructed, the plumber on site was wheelchair bound.
And I know a guy, 4WheelBob, who has gone up the Mist Trail in his custom chair.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I was on the site on April 15, too, hoping to get some of the campsites that were opening up in North Pines for earlier than Aug 15.
Yes, there were lots of sites available for the AUG 15-SEP 14 time period, later than usual. Heck even for Labor Day weekend. I think it's those darn Craigslist guys who put a kink in the reservation system in January and February...too many people getting rese

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Remember when you look at photos of sites, that the sites across from you will likely be occupied. So more obstacles than just the rocks, bumpers and trees.
Some one in a rented motorhome backed into our awning a few years back, in Yosemite...you can imagine how far into our site they were. And our Subaru and Silverado have been hit by motorhomes backing in or out of sites at state parks.

General Discussion Nine of us did the Panorama Trail last year...started at Upper Pines, instead of the 4 Mile Trailhead. Nice to end up closer to camp. (Some from our group only hike once a year...on our Yosemite trip.) The Half Dome cables were still down...that's what was planned.
Quite a few years back, my husband and I did Rockslides up to El Cap and came out via the Yosemite Falls trail. The bottoms of

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion That's what I thought it was...wild radish.
I'm no expert by any means, but a LONG time ago, when I walked to elementary school in SoCal, we'd cut across a small field that had a little diagonal path through the wild mustard and radishes. Of couse that lot is now a mini mall...

General Discussion It is a letdown not to get your reservations. Keep watching for cancellations. If I would've been successful on Tuesday with the rest of my family, I would've cancelled a whole week in June. (I'll be using those reservations now, thank you very much.) And some one mentioned that you need a high speed connection... I failed with high speed WiFi and was successful last month with one of the slo
