Wow, that is truly bizarre. I re-posted the announcement and picture (not mine) of the Glacier Point Ski Lodge on the general forum.
The top of the 4 mile trail was a bit icy when I went, used my spikies, but by now it may all have melted away.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra This from Yosemite Nations FB page:
"Yosemite National Park is now started offering overnight stays at the #GlacierPoint Ski hut, is now accessible by the recently-opened Four-Mile Trail.
They have availability at the Glacier Point Ski Hut for hikers, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights starting Friday, January 17. Access to the hut is via the 4-Mile Trail. Guests should call the

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Yes, it was nice to be able to backpack in January. But at the same time bizarre. We need snow, and lots of it, to make up for how dry the season has been thus far.
Peeked in the windows of the Glacier Point winter ski lodge (summertime it is a coffee/snack/ice cream place.) Inside it was all set up for winter overnight visitors with bunk-beds on one side and lounge furniture on the other.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Not so good at trip reports, but here are a few phone pics from my trip January 1-3.
Reflection in waterever little water is still flowing in the Merced. Pic taken next to Swinging bridge.
Just a trickle in Vernal Fall.
Looking at Half Dome from the Panorama trail.
Glacier Point at sunset. I had it all to myself which was nice.
First light the next morning.

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra Was in Yosemite January 1-3, went up the JMT/Mist/Panorama trails to Glacier Point and down the 4 mile. So not the Yosemite Falls trail and a couple of weeks ago, but probably similar conditions nonetheless.
Very little snow, very little. Pretty much have to get all the way up to the rim for there to be any snow at all.
So I doubt you will have any use for snow shoes. I found the micro spike

Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra > When do I need to start looking at permits?
168 days before your start date. More info here.
> How easy is it to get transport back to Tuolumne Meadows from there?
Usually an easy hitch from Whitney Portal down to Lone Pine, CREST bus to Mammoth.
The YARTS bus runs from Mammoth to Tuolomne Meadows, then onto Yosemite Valley, and after a four hour layover in Yosemite Valley it conti

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion As others have said:
Once per year, at most
Nikwax down wash
Commercial washer / dryer
To that I would add:
dry it really, really well, several hours in the dryer, when you (finally) take it out of the dryer you will have a bag that is far puffier then you remember
also make sure you air the bag out well after each trip, make sure it is completely dry by letting it sit out in the sun for

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Quoteeeek
Other Wildlife Sightings: This week, mountain lions were reportedly seen on three separate occasions in Yosemite Valley at Sentinel Bridge, in Cook’s Meadow, and near the Upper Falls trailhead behind Camp 4. For more information on mountain lions in Yosemite National Park, please visit: http://www.nps.gov/yose/naturescience/mountainlion.htm.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Sunrise at May Lake is always a treat. I got up early to see if I could capture a few shots.
By 6:30 am the sun was up and the lake looked like this...
nice but not glowing as I had seen on previous visits...
so I focus on lake side rocks and ...
reflections...
that seem to take on a deeper hue..
actually a glow...
that spreads...

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion That photo was taken earlier in the week. I think Groveland is going to be OK.
From today's sfgate story on Groveland coping with the Rim Fire: "After a week of bad news, the tide began to turn in the town's favor Saturday, with reports that the fire was no longer active in the Pine Mountain Lake region."
According to inciweb evacuation advisories were just lifted for Pine Mountain

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Thanks for the trip report.
Went over Red Peak pass a number of years ago and loved it, particularly Lower Ottoway lake and the area around Red Devil. Your pictures inspire me to plan a return trip. Thank you!

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion You can do it Steve!
Most people go north to south as in Yosemite to Whitney and here is why:
1. The peaks and passes get higher as you go culminating at Whitney, going north to south lets your body acclimate as you go.
2. There are several resupply points on the north end of the trail. Yosemite Valley, Tuolomne Meadows, Reds Meadow and VVR all have stores where you can buy a few things and/

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Thanks for the trip report.
The Mountain Yellow Legged Frog is now listed as an endangered species. The remote high altitude lakes of Yosemite are some of the only places this frog can still be found. More info here.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Not sure what you mean by better route? Your route looks just fine.
I have gone this way a couple of times. Easy cross country travel. Never seen a use trail or cairns, which is just the way I like it.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Big thanks to all of you who have posted long and detailed trip reports lately. Hats off to you! I enjoy reading them and I think it is helpful for those who are planning trips.
This however is not such a detailed report, just a handful of pictures that I took on a trip in late June of this year.
Came in on Amtrak/YARTS from the Bay Area and arrived midday in the Valley without a set plan. D
