QuoteDoes it work with no signal?
Yup, the iphone4 and later has a real GPS inside, so the GPS apps work just fine without a signal.
I never used to take my phone into the backcountry. Figured why bother as I seldom got reception.
Now I bring it more often than not. The camera is more than adequate for my needs and the GPS is handy as well.
The difficulty is keeping the battery charged. Th

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Merry Christmas QITNL, it was a pleasure to meet you at the top of Snow Creek. And funny how we had the exact same tents. Here is my pic from earlier in the afternoon on Christmas Eve:

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion The hiker box at the Tuolomne Meadows store is a free box. Leave any packaged food or gas cans you have left over after your trip. There are backpackers and climbers that will be happy for it.
There are plenty of bear boxes around Tuolomne where you can cache the food for a week. Be neatly organized about it, as in put it in a cardboard box with your name on it and date of return, that way nobod

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Random thoughts on food for long hikes:
You'll be more hungry during the second week for two reasons: some of the "reserves" will have been depleted and you'll be adjusted to the altitude.
Aim for your food to have an average of at least 100 calories per ounce.
Given the above, 1 1/2 pounds of food will give you 2400 calories per day which is probably about right for your first wee

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Thanks Jana for making those changes and also explaining what I was doing wrong with the printing (it's formatted for legal size and I was printing it on regular size paper.)
Adding the emailable file is probably helpful for a lot of folks that can't attend the meeting in person. What email address should that be sent to?
One more question: The booklet has a five pages (page 13, 15, 17, 19

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion There is a technical issue here. Two versions of the booklet: one that you can save and print out, and one that you can edit to add your comments, print out and send in to submit your comments to the planning process. Problem - neither version will print out correctly, only the middle of the pages print out with all your typed comments truncated / half sentences missing.
There is also supposed t

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I have been taking my son at least once every winter since he was little. We play in the snow, go ice-skating at Curry Village, take the bus up to Badger Pass and generally enjoy ourselves thoroughly. We are however low budget types and often don't plan our get-aways more than a week or so in advance.
Three low cost winter alternatives in the valley that have never been booked up when we wanted

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion A google search came up with this page http://www.nps.gov/yose/parkmgmt/vogelsang.htm from 2008.
Interestingly it shows that the drinking water provided at the camp is untreated.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Quoterobinjayp
You could always use the Merced or Tenaya Creek with some biodegradable/environmentally friendly soap for your showering purposes.
Please, please, please DO NOT PUT SOAP OF ANY KIND IN THE RIVER!
All soap pollutes the water. The biodegradable soaps need to filter through soil to biodegrade which is why the rangers tell everybody who gets a back country permit to make sure to

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion The map and compass comment was probably from me. I was on that trail three weeks ago and a few miles of trail between Glen Aulin and May Lake was completely snow covered.
By now most of it will have melted out, so navigating by just following the trail should be fine. I would still never venture out into the back country without a map and compass and the skills to use them however, but that's

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion When I was there at the beginning of July. At that time the phones were out and here is how they did it. And if the phones are still out, probably how it is still working.
To avoid confusion and double booking only Tuolomne permit station gave out first-come permits for Tuolomne trail-heads.
Permits were written by hand.
Quotas very much still in place (and surprisingly many trail heads fill

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Take bear cans! That way you don't have to stress over getting to Sunrise HSC in three hours. Camp at one of the Sunrise Lakes instead, much more spectacular. It sounds like you'll only have the one night out on the trail, make it a great one. Besides the HSC is a couple of miles out of your way if you are heading to Clouds Rest.

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion Not sure if this answer comes to late, you might have left already. Was in Yosemite for the last few days. Hiked from Tuolomne to Glen Aulin and onwards towards May Lake on July 10th. Ran into a party of four who had planned to go to Ten Lakes. They entered at the Murphy Creek trailhead and only made it a couple of miles the first day due to snow. I ran into them on the afternoon of their second

Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion I was just on that trail July 10 and 11 so can give you the scoop on conditions as of right now, but the melt is on and conditions will have changed (improved) considerably by the time you and your group get there.
Trail conditions:
Tuolomne Meadows to Glen Aulin was snow free all the way. The stream crossings at Delaney and Dingley are shin to knee high, the water was cold but not really movin
