Yosemite National Park Announces Public Scoping for the Scenic Vista Management Plan Environmental Assessment
Date: January 30, 2009

Yosemite National Park is announcing the public scoping period for the Scenic Vista Management Plan Environmental Assessment (EA). Public scoping comments will be used to assist the park in developing a range of reasonable and feasible project alternatives that meet the purpose and need, including a no action alternative, and then analyzing the environmental effects of each alternative. A 30-day public scoping period for this EA will open on February 12, 2009 and will extend through March 13, 2009. Written comments should be postmarked no later than March 13, 2009.

Yosemite National Park was originally set aside for preservation due to its outstanding scenery. In 1851, Dr. Lafayette Bunnell, one of the first Europeans to gaze on Yosemite’s beauty, described the supreme grandeur of Yosemite Valley: "...the clouds...partially dimmed the higher cliffs and mountains. This obscurity of vision but increased the awe with which I beheld it, and as I looked, a peculiar exalted sensation seemed to fill my whole being."

Millions of modern-day explorers have experienced this same view. Today, we call it Tunnel View. It’s just one of many iconic views and vistas for which Yosemite is famous.

The purpose of the Scenic Vista Management Plan is to:

Protect Yosemite’s historic viewsheds and the natural processes that created them.

Preserve the historic & cultural contexts in which the viewpoints were created.

Restore visitor use opportunities associated with lost vistas.
Where historic viewpoints cannot be rehabilitated, identify potentially new views or vistas.

Restore or maintain vistas by restoring natural species composition, structure, and function to systems or by using traditional American Indian management practices.

A public open house will take place on February 25, 2009 from 1pm to 4pm in the Valley Visitor Center Auditorium in Yosemite Valley. Park Admission fees will be waived for those attending the open house.

Comments can be submitted at public meetings, by mail, fax, email, and through the Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) commenting system. Comments may be submitted by the following means:

The vista link didn't work above.

Just curious.
What exactly is:
"traditional American Indian management practices"??

By the way, the new Tunnel View is a huge improvement.
Very very nice. I take it some of this is to cut some trees down to
provide better views. I'm all for that. Just take a look at tunnel view
before and after... it's worth it...

I think it involves burning overgrowth.

Looks like the press release got out before they put the page up. Perhaps it'll be there in a day or two.

Link still no worky.

Still wondering what "traditional American Indian management practices" are.

No disrespect but if it "involves burning overgrowth" then I need to tell
my dad that he has been practicing it for ages.

Native American
Land-Use Practices and
Ecological Impacts

"During a span of 10,000 years or more, Native Americans in the Si-
erra Nevada were sustained by hunting and fishing, gathering, lithic
quarrying, and trading. To meet their requirements for firewood, fish
and game, vegetal foods, craft supplies, and building materials, the
native peoples of the Sierra managed biotic resources intensive-
ly, with significant ecological and evolutionary consequences. The
distribution, structure, composition, and extent of certain plant com-
munities, for example, were shaped by burning, pruning, sowing,
weeding, tilling, and selective harvesting."

(later in the same article)

"Resource management by Native Americans in the Sierra Ne-
vada bioregion was long term and widespread, producing
ecological and evolutionary consequences in the biota (Black-
burn and Anderson 1993). Therefore, many ecosystems in the
Sierra are not self-maintaining islands that require only pro-
tection to remain in a “pristine” state. There is currently an
ecological “vacuum,” or disequilibrium, in the Sierra Nevada
resulting from the departure of Native Americans from man-
aging these ecosystems."

One of the funnier aspects of how people misinterpret everything related to Native Americans is that they automatically assume that indians were in complete harmony with nature as it was, disturbing and changing very little about the environment.

The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Thanks Bee. I guess they just wanted to sound
like they weren't just hacking trees and vegetation down to get a view.
Or maybe they are going to cut them down little by little...
Still waiting for the doc.

o, don't worry, it was the white man's fault
the white man is to blame for everything

overpopulation - white man
high gas prices - white man
low gas prices - white man
unemployment - white man
and, of course.... wait for it...

Nah. The Peoples Republic of China is now the largest nation in production of CO2 emissions. The US is #2. At this point I would think India isn't far behind. It's not the white man. It's all men (an women).

We used to laugh (boyfriend grew up on Rez) about how all the "indian lovers" used to sanitized native american history.
