A FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE MERCED RIVER AT...

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY - HANFORD CA 820 AM PDT TUE MAY 24 2005

...A FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE MERCED RIVER AT POHONO BRIDGE...

AT 7 AM...THE STAGE ALONG THE UPPER MERCED RIVER AT POHONO BRIDGE WAS 10.14 FEET. THE RIVER AT POHONO BRIDGE IS EXPECTED TO LOWER TO NEAR 9.5 FEET THIS EVENING...THEN RISE ABOVE FLOOD STAGE AGAIN EARLY
WEDNESDAY MORNING. WITH WARM TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS...ALLOWING FOR SNOWMELT RUNOFF TO MAINTAIN HIGH FLOWS. THE MERCED RIVER AT POHONO BRIDGE IN YOSEMITE NATIONAL
PARK IS EXPECTED TO FLUCTUATE NEAR ITS FLOOD STAGE.

HISTORICALLY...WHEN FORECAST OR OBSERVED STAGE AT POHONO BRIDGE REACHES 10.5 FEET...WATER TOPS THE SWINGING BRIDGE DOWNSTREAM FROM CHAPEL MEADOW. OVERFLOW FROM WOSKI POND FLOODS ACCESS ROAD (NORTHSIDE DRIVE) LEADING OUT OF THE WEST ENTRANCE OF THE PARK.

FORECASTS ARE BASED ON PRESENT AND FORECASTED METEOROLOGICAL AND HYDROLOGIC CONDITIONS AT TIME OF ISSUANCE.


MERCED RIVER AT
POHONO 7 AM STAGE 10.1 FT
FORECAST TO RECEDE TO NEAR 9.5 FT TUESDAY EVENING
THEN FORECAST TO RISE ABOVE FLOOD STAGE NEAR MIDNIGHT TUESDAY
THEN FORECAST TO CREST NEAR 10.5 FT WEDNESDAY MORNING
THEN FORECAST TO RECEDE TO NEAR 10.0 FT WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
FLOOD STAGE 10.0 FT


UNLISTED FORECAST POINTS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN BELOW MONITOR STAGE. ALL THOSE AFFECTED BY RIVER CONDITIONS SHOULD REMAIN ALERT FOR RAPID CHANGES AND FOR POSSIBLE FORECAST REVISIONS.

FLOOD STAGE...ALONG UNLEVEED SECTIONS OF THE RIVER...OVERBANK FLOWS ARE OF SUFFICIENT MAGNITUDE TO CAUSE CONSIDERABLE INUNDATION OF LAND AND ROADS...OR SIGNIFICANT HAZARD TO LIFE AND PROPERTY. ALONG FLOOD
CONTROL PROJECT LEVEES...THIS IS THE STAGE AT WHICH THE FLOW WITHIN THE LEVEE IS AT MAXIMUM DESIGN CAPACITY.
