If anyone is looking to go to Ribbon Falls this is the time. We went today and it was absolutely excellent. The amphitheater is almost totally dry but there's still enough water for the falls to be a sight when you're there. You can walk right up to the base of the falls and not get soaked. The last time we went there was so much water you couldn't get near the amphitheater without getting drenched. The picture below doesn't do it justice but it's the best I could get.

A recap of how to get there.....

Heading west a little past El Capitan Meadow park in the pullout with a locked gate on the right. Walk up to Old Big Oak Flat Road, turn right and walk down a few hundred feet. The entrance to the use trail is next to a boulder partially hidden by a manzanita. There's a cairn at the entrance. The lower part of the trail is not always obvious but there are numerous cairns to keep you on track. The trick here is to stay near Ribbon Creek. If you lose the trail you'll run into it again. You should be able to hear the creek all along the trail. The trail comes within sight of the creek in a couple of places. The second half of the trail is quite steep, has few cairns but is mostly obvious. Far up, the trail makes a hard left turn and briefly flattens out. Go about 20' to a spur trail that branches to the right. This will take you right to the amphitheater. There are a few cairns on the spur trail. If you miss the spur trail you'll end up at the wall for climbers. It took us old guys about 1 hour 50 minutes to get to the amphitheater. Bring mosquito repellent. They were awful on the trail but gone in the sun of the amphitheater.

I'm not making any sense of this
If you're walking up OBOFR a right turn would take you up slope, not down.
A few hundred feet from where?
Is this past the washout where the road ended when you were able to drive up?
Is the use trail entrance on OBOFR?

otherwise Thanks for the post and picture

btw with the gate there now how do the employees get up to the wood lot to get their firewood? or is it no longer the wood lot?

From the parking area at the locked gate, walk up as straight as you can to OBOFR. You'll intersect OBOFR a little east of where the old pavement ends. Make a right on OBOFR and go a few hundred feet. The road is straight here. There's still a few traces of pavement. The use trail entrance is on OBOFR and is marked by a cairn on the road and another just barely past the start of the trail. There's a big rock there partially hidden by a manzanita.

I hope this is clearer.
