Glen Aulin reunion
August 22, 2016 07:36AM
We wanted to do a short backpacking trip in Yosemite with our daughter, and we were lucky enough to get a walk-up permit for a pass-though to Glen Aulin. We knew this route, since we'd hiked in last year, and it met all of our criteria: some nice views, lovely walking along a river, the opportunity for some real solitude, and easy enough that we could do the hike and still get back home to Napa on our way out.

And did we mention that permits were available?

Off we went.

The trail along the Tuolumne River is full of deep pools, cascades, and spectacular waterfalls. We enjoyed every minute of it. And once we got to Glen Aulin, we were happy to top up our water bottles at the backpackers campground there, and continue up Conness Canyon until we were well beyond the reach of the rest of the hikers.

We pressed on past the narrow gorge or Conness Creek, and then found a quiet spot up on a shelf above the creek. It was very peaceful, and well-hidden from the trace of a use-trail that follows the creek at this point, and it made a perfect camping spot for our little group.

A quiet afternoon, with naps and cups of tea, followed the hike. I fished a bit, while the two ladies went wading in the creek.

After a luxurious five course dinner (soup, couscous with paneer, lentils and rice with Indian spice, dried fruit, a couple of dessert energy bars, and a sip of brandy apiece, we finally turned in. The skies were cloudy, but we only got a light rain, and that came after we were already bedded down in the tent.

The next morning we packed up, packed out, and were at the car in time to eat lunch in Groveland.

OF course, one thing we learned is that our daughter is in better shape than we are, and we could not keep up with her apparently effortless pace. Youth is a thing of beauty. But next time, she gets to carry the heavy pack!

And book another great hike in the family album.

The TRs of your recent hikes have me intrigued but I can't see the pics on your blog :-( although the photos from older blog entries are just fine.

It's Google thing. Ever since they killed Picasa, it's hard to share photos with the public. I can email a link, but so far I can't post them for others to see.

And since Google Sites, Picasa, and Google photos are all part of the glorious Google empire, you have to assume that they know about this, and they just don't care.

For my recent trip report I put my photos up on Google Photos rather than Picasa and then in my TR inserted the image URLs from Google Photos same way I used to do with Picasa (right-click image, select Copy Image Location, paste that into the forum's Insert Image field), it works fine.

Did it again here:

I did the same thing with my Sky Lakes post, uploaded the photos into an album, then while viewing each picture in the album did a right-click Copy Image URL from within Firefox, and pasted that URL into the post.

Just as a double check, I opened up Google Chrome and went directly to your site...and then to the blog...still no access to the photos. Bummer!

OK---so I created a new album on Google Photos...that might help.

But if not, my daughter suggested this hack:

Thanks for the photos! The Tuolumne River looks great for so late in the year. I'll be up there next weekend.

Where's the first set of photos? I've hiked your route before and I don't recognize them at all.

I went this past weekend, started & went behind Pothole. There are nice use trails that take you to the first footbridge so that you don't need to cross the river, if you don't feel like it. But there was more water than expected. Not as high and powerful as during spring, but the waterfalls looked to be at least 75% of max. The "chess pieces" cairns at White Cascades are gone now. There were at least 20 of them in July. The nearby domes are fun to climb. The views you get are tremendous and unique, even if you don't reach the very tops.

Water levels can change dramatically. For instance, Yosemite Falls had been really going all of last week. Must have been from the storms Oct 14-16 weekend. But if you look at the webcam now, it's much lower again.
