Snow conditions on Valley trails
February 19, 2017 10:43AM
I'm taking some friends to Yosemite next weekend (Feb 25th). They've been there only in the summer, if at all, and I got them all excited about snow. But with the combination of heavy precipitation and high snow levels I'm not sure what to expect. How high do we have to go to see snow? How high can we get in hiking boots?

With hiking boots (and microspikes perhaps)..

You should be able to get to...
Valley rim from:
- Yosemite Falls Trail
- Snow Creek

You should be able to get to...
- Clark Point
- Union Point gate
- Vernal Fall
- Nevada Fall

I'd say Nevada is most diff...
You can prolly get to top o Yosemite... but that's gonna be more post-holy.
Look at the webcams... valley just got rain...
Luckily Glacier Point got snow (the cam is back up)

Anyway... have fun
You should be able to do alot in the valley itself too...
There was scant snow there Wed... and it looks like what was there
... well.. a lot melted in this ongoing storm...
maybe it will get colder and stick lower...
But even then... I'd expect all above pretty true...

Have fun

Weather next weekend looks like cold and snowy...highlights (for me) would include looking for frazil ice (could be another bumper crop!) and snowshoeing from Badger Pass to Dewey Point.

Don't do North Rim even if Chick-on says 100% guaranteed no snow.

You mean "north rim"

What came first, the doodles or the snow?

IIRC, doodles first.. then snow... but the snow wasn't payback.. (at least knowingly)...

To be fair (sorry, Bearproof) "North Rim Traverse" means something specific to many. Whereas "north rim" hiking is more open and requires clarification. Too bad Ribbon got ya... that's a "fun" area depending on conditions!

Wuz just there... um... yikes...

Highly recommend in winter:
- microspikes
- traction devices
- hiking sticks!

(we ran across SOOO many people not prepared... )
(and one guy who followed our snow shoe tracks towards Eagle Peak ... )
(SIGH)

But yeah, what I said above is entirely true... even with snow on the trail
