Why Lukens?
You'll save 800 ft climb at end and about 2 miles
if you start from Yosemite Creek campground.
It's still 15 miles round trip from there...
(as opposed to 19 from Lukens)
The trails are easy to follow in summer.

You actually save 7 (SEVEN) miles (roundtrip) if you start
and and at Yose Creek Campground... (and nearly 1000 ft. climb)
I was right at 15 miles roundtrip from Yose Creek Campground.
So... 15 v. 22 ...
(I'll let you do the math now)
Sorry I was in Yose Valley Lodge when I first responded...
didn't have access to mapping program (and no, I don't remember
any of this) (well... other than general... uh.. yeah, you should
start at Yosemite Creek campground on account there is a big
climb at the junction below... and you can avoid that and
it's shorter but I don't know the numbers so I might get zinged
on them if I get them completely wrong but then again probably
no one is going to check too much or anything so I could
probably just make stuff up and people probably won't read it
anyway on account a tree just feel on a half dome curry
village pizza squirrel! ) (and I mean no disrespect to half dome)
(It's lost 2/5's of it's marbles and it's still doing well)

Hmm, I looked in my Peterson Field Guide to Mammals of North America, and I can't find that genus of squirrel listed in there.

I can't find the pink Yosemite Chick-on in the Sibley Birds West, but it seems to keep popping up in unconfirmed reports.. hm... if we could only track and capture the elusive avian!
