Fun report! I think we met that same grouse when we hiked up there a few years ago. It was not afraid if anything--or at least us. Sadly you didn't get up high enough to meet the resident marmots...

And nice history as well. I've always loved the story of how Hoffman named May Lake for his sweetheart...
