Yosemite National Park has always been a victim of its massive popularity. The more that people visit it, the more this natural wonder is negatively affected by its admirers. The trick is to strike a balance that gives the public access to the crown jewel of the National Parks System while still protecting Yosemite from the "human footprint" of several million tourists, campers and back-country hikers.

Interesting concept involved here, sort of like a permit within a permit (gates blocking road access from one part of the park -- think: Checkpoint Charlie -- to the other that might be over crowded. With "staycations" being the mode of the day, a $20 park ticket is a bargain compared to a $400 plane ticket, so the crowding is only going to get worse.

Just avoid weekends in the Valley. Or, if you must, get there before 10 AM.
