Has there been any water samples taken from snow melt run-off or snow pack to see if any radiation levels have increased? With all the news of Idaho, Washington,California,Oregon and Canada showing higher radiation levels in tap water, I am curious about back-country water supplies. Wouldn't be much use using my Katadyn filter!!!

don't think there is a Godzilla syndrome

you know, all of us baby boomers (even here on the east coast) have small amounts of radiation from the 1950s Nevada test site above-ground testing. No need for concern this far away from Japan or Chernobyl, but of course close is a different story.

Sounds like the water being emitted from Fukushima into the ocaean is a helluva lot scary-er ...

Yesterday on the news they said the gov't there declared it would take 10 years to clean up the whole thing ...

sheesh ... there goes my Pacific Ocean seafood diet ... and my Gulf Coast fish diet was already at a complete halt ...

gee, haven't heard anything about snow samples being tested here [yet]

Just thinking, but if samples of rain water in east Tennessee are showing up more elevated in radiation, wonder if the SNOW holds more solid particles as it falls on the higher elevations. Freezes and holds the fall-out better. Then the run-off has not been diluted/filtered by nature as much at the river/stream drinking source. True that it may kill the {bugs}, but we might grow a third leg and no longer need the Katadyn water filter or trekking poles!!Rolling on floor laugh

I hope not; I drink from the streams all the time. A filter is not going to eliminate the radiation!

A Geiger–Müller tube might not be sensitive enough for this use. A scintillation counter would be a better bet and would allow getting a gamma ray spectrum.

Well, if it is not that sensitive, makes me feel a bit better since the quantity is "not that much."

Alarming video ... at least as it's presented in such a graphic display ... not clear however, is while those swirling color clouds depicted in the wave-charts dazzle in such worrisome fashion, just how truly toxic are they ?? ... at a certain point below some arbitrarily agreed level, even the worst toxin is [supposedly] safe to be around .. we all have some mercury in our body ... we're told anyhow ...

The short answer is: chemically inert. (Although compounds of the inert gases have also been fabricated.)
Depending on the number of neutrons in the nucleus, you can have a number of radioactive isotopes.

Here is a comment under the video. My thoughts pretty much. The video lost me at the "only by explosion" is the Xe133 isotope produced.

Throwing the BS Flag for your claim that Xe133 is ONLY produced in a nuclear explosion. Xe133 is a fission product regardless of whether it is created by a reactor or a nuclear weapon. In fact, reactor-produced Xe133 is used for inhalation in the diagnostic evaluation of pulmonary function and imaging, as well as assessment of cerebral blood flow. Your wild assertions without sound scientific basis is fuel for the tin-foil hat brigade at the IAEA facebook page. Be a diligent researcher Dutch.

Added note re. the subject heading of this thread:
There is no such thing as the "Sierra Nevadas" or the "Sierras" for that matter.
"Sierra" translates as "mountain range."
"Nevada" is an adjective meaning "snowy."
One properly refers to the Sierra Nevada or the Sierra as the geographical entity.

I, being a Marine from the early 80's know for a fact that if it is really bad, you will not be told by our government and that also means the rest of the world sure won't fess up to anything either. It was always "First to go , Last to know"!! I am thinking we have a full blown MELTDOWN and it is dispersing radiation at no extra cost to the world.

There are lots of physics grad students that would let us know about radiation problems. So, what you "know for a fact" doesn't seem very factual to me.

avatar Re: Radioactive Snowpack in Sierra Nevadas??

I'm all for uncovering the "truth" when dangers are being hidden from us, but not when the uncovering is done via pseudoscience and sensationalism. I'm no expert on radiation, nuclear core damage, or global dispersion, but I feel like the reputable scientific journals that do cover such things would be making a bigger hullabaloo if there was such catastrophic, eminent danger.
Re: Radioactive Snowpack in Sierra Nevadas??
May 08, 2011 11:05PM
Well, it will take many months before the journals would publish anything. It does take time for them to study it, since the nuclear diaster did just happen.

Please keep in perspective how many 10,000s of people died from the earthquake and tsunami,
versus the far, far, far smaller number from radioactivity, whether acute poisoning in nuclear workers, or delayed effects.

And also remember that aside from known and treatable radiation-induced thyroid cancer, most of those delayed risks are based on statistical assumptions, and that the risks in the Sierra snowpack are so infinitesimally small as to be laughable.
