Camping in Yosemite with RV
May 12, 2011 09:48AM
Hello all,

Me and 3 of my friends are travelling to yosemite with a RV around 7th of june. However we forgot to reserve any spots.
Now I read that there are FCFS campsites however I cant seem to find when some open. I found this site http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/campground.htm#table
also I read on this forum that around late june it's not that hard to get a spot.
Can anybody tell me when these FCFS sites open? Or should I call and hope on any last minute cancellation for the campsite with reservation requirements?

Most of the FCFS campgrounds are along the Tioga road which will be closed June 7th. A guess of when the Tioga road would open is the end of June but there are too many unknowns to realy know when it will be open and then the campgrounds open later. Also, many of these campgrounds will not take a large RV.

Your best option is to get lucky and get a last minute valley campground cancellation or stay in a private RV campground near the park. There is the Yosemite West KOA canpground at MidPines and at Groveland there is Yosemite Pines RV Park and Thousand Trails Yosemite Lakes RV Park. All are about 1/2 hour from Yosemite and have websites for additional info.

Since June 7th is a weekday, you're in luck that a quick scan of the campsites listed in recreation.gov shows a number of Forest Service campgrounds still have sites available for RVs. Most are in the Sierra National Forest south of Yosemite around Bass Lake and Oakhurst. That's still an easy drive into Yosemite for day visits.

Just go here:
Find Camping - Recreation.Gov

Enter 95389 for the Zip Code (that's the zip code for Yosemite National Park)

And then enter your arrivale date (June 7, 2011), and your length of stay.

Then click on 'Search Facilites'

You'll find a number of National Forest Campgrounds near Yosemite still have campsites available for June 7th.

Indian Flat RV Park is another possibility, and it's only 25-30 minutes to the Valley. Bass Lake is about 1.5 hours to the Valley but only 30 minutes to Mariposa Grove.

Keep checking the Recreation.gov website for cancellations as well.

Early Saturday is a decent day to reach if searching for a FCFS. At Yosemite, you additionally have the choice of the campgrounds simply outside the recreation center.

Actually, early Saturday is quite hard, because most people arrive Friday evening for a weekend stay. If you can arrive early Friday morning, your chances are MUCH better
