Indian CanyonTrail
May 25, 2011 06:50PM
I was perusing Chick-on's photos and saw a set where he and his significant other hiked up Indian Canyon from behind the store. I remember coming down this in 1972 and there was a decent trail and lo and behold, right at dark, a steel cable bridge dropping steeply down over a boulder field. One strand to step on and two to hold onto. My guess is that bridge isn't there anymore. Does anyone know? Just curious...

Jeff.

Wow. That would be cool.

Def. not there on the "main" trail. I have seen pix of peeps going up the creek and there being some
steel tower stuff though.

wherever is the man ... he will prolly chime in

Thanks for the memory. I'm pretty sure that this wasn't part of the Indian Canyon Trail, which was a mule trail. There is no place on that trail where a cable bridge makes sense. The trail doesn't cross any talus in the lower third of the canyon. That's why the trail is located so hard up against the west wall of Indian Canyon....to stay away from the talus piles that choke that lower part of the canyon near the creek bed.

At the mouth of Indian Canyon is Yosemite Village. There once were orchards and a big stock corral, and maybe other stuff that needed more water than the official drinking water network wanted to supply. Since Indian Creek flows all summer long, I'm guessing that the thing you walked on once had a pipe slung under it, carrying water from Indian Creek to some place that needed it.

Does anyone else out there remember this thing?
