I like Hetch-Hetchy for a spring trip and have been wondering if it would be possible to park at the Hetch-Hetchy entrance gate and walk in?
Two issues come to mind though:
Are there good parking spots so you are not blocking the roadway?
Would the entrance gate still be staffed so they could issue you a permit?

It is closed at the gate which is at Mather. The same gate which closes every night.Quote

So it the road closed at Mather or can you drive to the trail-heads at the entrance station and are they issuing permits for hikes starting from there?

You cannot drive to the trailheads off of Hetch Hetchy Road.
Right at 120/Evergreen road they plastered a big red CLOSED sign.
I guess that wasn't clear enough so they made a custom one that now says
something like "Road is closed at Mather" or "Road Closed - No access to Hetch Hetchy"
or something similar.

Baseline is not well known, if at all. Have you been there?
I'll bet you that you walk in to a ranger station at the begining of season
and say Base Line Camp and it's a good chance they go "huh?".
Self Reg is obviously a non-issue...
I mentioned it here... to the sound of crickets:
http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,62905,62920#msg-62920
In there I explictly mentioned HH closed only being a minor inconvenience.
No one asked anything else.... and not even a thank you after last response.
Baseline Camp TH is not "open" until the forest roads are open... which is around April 15th.
And not sure I'd even drive there with my Chick-on mobile...

I am definitely NOT her! couldnt keep up with her if i tried.
The suggestions you gave sound great, and as you said its all gonna be good, couldnt agree more. BUT...coupla things. First off im a bit anal and "need" a plan. As of right now we have permits for Rancheria in 6/29, out on 6/30. Glen Aulin in 7/1, out 7/2. OBOFR in 7/4, out Yos Falls 7/6. Maintaining flexibility is great but from what i understand the permits are not always easy to come by. If we have these permits dont we have to sorta stick to the plan or adjust the hikes to the TH? Checking my email is no longer the first thing i do when i turn my computer on! Thank You! Green Bay? Really? go-pack-go?

I've been known to rather that turning right at Parson's Lodge, to take the road past it to the sewage ponds, through the woods to the meadow, across the meadow, be prepared to get your feet wet crossing a creek, to where the river leaves the meadows. You can then follow the river till the trail meets up. I guess I'm on the opposite side of the river as when you start from Pothole.Quote

. . . snip . . .
These days I prefer to start at Pothole Dome. Takes something off those six miles.

This is my first go around in a forum of any type so im not sure if i am supposed to start a new post of questions or just continue on this one. Snooping around has led to more questions. On another post somebody was looking for some easy hikes for his out of shape kid. I was thinking these may be good starter hikes for my 15 + 13 yr old sons and 12(by the time we get there)yr old daughter. May Lake sounds great because lots have suggested camping there and doing some packless day hikes. Also Polly dome lake, which looks like more of a day hike. Yosemite Creek was also mentioned not sure if this was to the campground. Jayabrams mentioned going to North Dome and on to Yosemite falls. If we did this as a through hike and went down the falls is hitch hiking back to the car on Tioga Road the only option outside of hiking back? The other questions is trail heads, i have been looking here http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/trailheads.htm with limited success. I will continue my snooping and look forward to being inundated with info. PLEASE no more posts about this site being unavailable for March eeek! What else am i supposed to do?
