Great! Thanks for the helpful responses. Most of the campers we will be bringing are first timers. The thought of having them set up their tents in the dark is tempting.......by dobber - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I am taking a group camping in August, and we will be staying at one of the Hodgdon meadow group sites. Has anyone stayed there? What is it like, and what is the capacity of the bear lockers? Plenty of space for a group of about 28 that eats lots of food? Also, has anyone heard of bears breaking into enclosed cargo trailers for food? Thanks!by dobber - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I grew up in the mountains of northern New Mexico, and know what you mean about them glowing in the fall, but since we were in Los Alamos, I always assumed it was the radiation.by dobber - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I was hoping to get up into the eastern Sierras at the end of the month but looks like the color will all be gone by thenby dobber - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Now that I know that I don't need food, shelter, a sleeping bag, insect repellent, etc. my pack is sure going to be a lot lighter next time I go "backpacking". And I have Ross H. to thank!by dobber - General Discussion
I've actually done quite well at garage sales at the REI in Berkeley. You have to do your research first though, and know what you are looking for. I got a nice tent, sleeping bag, walking poles, bear cannister and mattress for about 1/3 what I would pay brand new, and all were in great shape. The trick was to grab what you were interested in (read the return labels -if it says "wrong color&by dobber - General Discussion
that extra e is to slow you down. Actually UCW (UnCocealed Whisk(e)y) will get you busted. Last time I was coming into May Lake from Glen Aulin, I met a Ranger who was cleaning up around the lake. We came across an empty campsite that had left a bottle of jack daniels outside their bear container while they went off hiking. the Ranger proceeded to write them a ticket, and I offered that sinceby dobber - General Discussion
I don't mind he packet oatmeals, but I also bring along some dried blueberries to mix with them. I also prepackage some granola and dried milk in small bags, then just add some water. pita bread or tortillas and humus are a lunch staple, along with jerky. Of course the very most important item is my flask of quality sipping whiskey.by dobber - General Discussion
I did myfirst backpack trip along the high sierra route this year, and planned it around staying at the backpack sites at the HSC's Glen Aulin was indeed at bill mentioned, car camping without the car. It is close enought that people who really shouldn't be backpacking can backpack to it. Folks showed up who had lied about having a bear canister, and one group kept throwing their leftovers out oby dobber - General Discussion

I know that technically this is outside of yosemite, but hope I can get some info here, since you have been so helpful in other matters. How quickly does the saddlebag lakes campground fill up? i am hoping to run up there some weekend soon to get in a quick overnight backpack trip to the twenty lakes basin, and would leave here on a friday afternoon. Any luck getting a closeby camping site?by dobber - General Discussion
I ran into the bear at Glen Aulin a few times during my stay. It was a juvenile. There were some other campers who really didn't get that whole "keep food away from bears" thing. One night they tossed their leftover rice about 10 feet behind their campsite, and were amazed when a bear came through a little later.by dobber - General Discussion
Just returned from Glen Aulin and May lake, and can report that the mosquitoes are thick between Glen Aulin and Cathedral Creek, medium in other areas.by dobber - General Discussion
Thanks for the info. So I'm thinking campgrounds around Tioga lake and that area will be the closest for a stay the night before heading out backpacking. Anyone know if they are open?by dobber - General Discussion
Is the backpackers camp in tuolumne campground open now? (Or more to the point, will it be open by the 20th of June? ) If not, where can one stay the day before and after a back county trip? Also, following my backpack trip around the 24th I am interested in staying an extra day down in the valley. Is there ever any FCFS camping available there?by dobber - General Discussion

I've got a wilderness permit to hike Glen Aulin, Waterwheel and Camp May beginning June 19th. Any idea what kind of conditions I might expect as far as snow conditions and/or mosquitos? This is my first backpacking trip into the high country, and I am very excited! Thanks for any infoby dobber - General Discussion
