Spelling for Olmstead Point is seen in most places as "Olmsted", and I think that is the correction you were making in spelling here a number of years ago. I just happened across this sign from Yosemite atet e Bus Stop and noticed that it is spelled "Olmstead". The site is named after the American Landscape Architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, so clearly that is the correct speby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I have seen the former link but not the latter. Thanks. I have this lingering thought that this "trek" that is now done annually in a commemorative fashion must be publicized somehow, and I seem to recall reading something about it in the last year or three. Maybe I saw something about it while in Yosemite, and perhaps it is not widely advertised or advertised through sources indby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I tried PMing Yosemite_Indian as suggested by mrcondron, but I have not received a response. I recall reading something about this last year and the year before, but now I just can't find any info. I sorta had it in my mind that they travelled further than TM, but then I realized that the old Mono Trail north of the Valley is, I believe, not even easily found. Perhaps I'm confused on that poinby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I too love Airplane shots of Yosemite and want to thank you for posting them. Somehow I had not noticed before that you had the website. I enjoyed looking that over last night and plan to return to look it over in more detail. Thanks Frankby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I'm looking for information on the annual trek done by local Native Americans that follows the Mono Trail from the Mono Lake area up and across the sierra. I have read some on the historical basis for this, although it isn't clear what tribe(s) was involved (Miwok, Paiute, Mono) -- perhaps all were. Nevertheless when we were in Yosemite a ranger I believe was talking about this "trek"by Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks for the great photos! I love the evolution of the "glow" in the reflection, until it is finally revealed in its full glory! I need to see this in person!by Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
A year ago this weekend I returned from this trip and have only just now gotten around to retrieving the tracks from my GPS. This first chart is a summary of the distance / elevation data. Day 12 turned out to be a rough day for me. Level or downhill movement was fine, but my "stepper-upper" was finally fighting back on the uphill portions. As luck would have it, it was the day of gby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Steve, Great trip report! I really enjoyed the photos and especially your description of your experience. I was hoping to make it back to Yosemite this summer, but it has not been possible. Seeing the pics and hearing your description certainly makes me ache to be there. I often think how great it would be to live close enough to Yosemite that I could easily get there frequently. Love the phtosynths! Thanks for posting. They take me back to my trip along the rim this past summer. Now for a question arising from ignorance.... Does the area in which you took the Snow Creek pic have a name? When I want to identify this site, I usually end up describing where it is rather than naming it. It would be so much simpler if it had a name.by Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks! I tried to embed but was not successful using either the cut and paste embed code or the video link in the editor here. So, I guess I don't know how to do it is the best way to summarize. Thanks again.by Frank - General Discussion

Thanks! Hopefully someday I'll have the equipment to make such a photo. Was there a lot of adjustments to the photo afterwards (photoshop, etc)? The nighttime photo looking up Tenaya Canyon seems to have better color, sharpness, contrast than the daytime one. It's not exactly what I would have naively expected. Beautiful! I love the night time photos! I've wondered how these are done. Do you take a variety of different long exposures and hope to get one that is good. I guess that is what is puzzling to me. The Koip Peak Quad going back to 1992 shows elevations in feet, while the Mt. Ritter quad going back to 1992 shows elevations in meters. I don't understand why that would be the case, though clearly it is the case. When they are juxtaposed in a mapping program the only way one would know would be to examine the boundaries of the quad maps or to just alreby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I have never noticed this before, but it appears that the topo map linked to at the bottom of the page, gmap4, on the "t4 topo high" setting, has sectors with elevations in meters juxtaposed to sections with elevations in feet. Is that something that is normal, and how would one know one was looking at elevations in meters if one just zoomed in to an area that is in meters and didn'tby Frank - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I didn't realize that was Porcupine Creek with the Cascades, but after looking back at the topo map it clearly is Porcupine. I had the mis-perception that the cascades occurred after the trail turned south. I also learned that the source for Snow Creek is May Lake -- didn't know that. Maps are fun. We were spending a night in the backpackers campground in the Valley in July. It was probably 75% or more occupied. Everyone in all the campsites got settled down and went to sleep at about the same time. About an hour later some folks came in to an existing camp and started talking really loud. I have not been through the Bear Valley / Pleasant Valley area. Chick-on, among others I'm guessing, would be able to give a fair view of the virtues of each. From what he said recently, the virtues of the Table Lake area may be dependent on the time of year of your visit. Thanks for the info! Yes, I remember your post about going through Muir Gorge last fall (and the swimming, and the bear, and the electronics, etc).
