I ordered the book and also Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon for a slight discount on Amazon. I have read about 10 pages of the Yosemite book and flipped through a lot of it. So far, so excellent! I take back what I said earlier, sort of. The book is quite well organized, can't wait to dive further into it. I'm camping out at Devils Postpile over my birthday (Aug. 12), I plan on reading moreby Vince - General Discussion
Now, this is interesting!!! I watched a show tonight on History Channel all about dams, and while they spent time discussing Grand Coulee and Hoover, they ended the program with what was done with the Cascades Diversion Dam, which was just outside Yosemite Park, on the Merced. This fits in a little bit with the earlier discussion about whether or not the Merced has ever dried up. So, ears perkeby Vince - General Discussion
My favorite page from the Yosemite NPS website is the water flow at Happy Isles (here) Looking at the average flow from 90+ years of data, and the current state of the river here in mid-July (less than 20 inches deep), I'm wondering if there is precedent for the river drying up completely?by Vince - General Discussion

Last time I was up there I insisted on putting on the back-up lights and not look down, meanwhile my brother, who almost had a heart attack when he first saw the cables, went down facing toward the shoulder. For me, I seriously don't want to know where I'm going when I'm retreating. Does this make sense? You say "all wrong," I say "well, let me think about that first." My tby Vince - General Discussion
Erase everyone but the guy on the right and maybe 1 or 2 people way down below and that's my experience on the cables. There are benefits for being a slow hiker sometimes.by Vince - General Discussion
Where do you live? I can help you to a pretty spot not far away. I personally favor the Eastern Sierra, and since the Sierra is only about 75 miles wide at the most...by Vince - General Discussion
Yosemite campgrounds are mainly bear- and human-riddled garbage scows anyway. Find an out-of-the-way spot away from the valley so you don't have to listen to other people, a campsite will run you maybe $20 or less per night and some places, if you know where to look, are free. Putting a campsite reservation on ebay is really scummy. Talk about something for nothing, I'm shocked anyone would bidby Vince - General Discussion
Nope Two miles past Happy Isles trailhead puts you in a place where you can't camp anyway, nor would you want to. Little Yosemite is the closest (about 3.5 miles) and you don't want to camp there, either, it's a joke. I wouldn't bother camping anywhere near Yosemite Valley or anywhere along Highway 120. Unless you like crowds and feces. Plenty of other spots in the Sierra where you can find a quby Vince - General Discussion
Only rattlesnake I've ever seen in the Sierra was about 2 miles below Mist Fall and just north of the bridge across Kings River where the river meets Bubbs Creek in Kings Canyon NP. So you are lucky to see one. Quite a rare sighting, slightly less rare than a Mountain Lion (which I'm still seeking).by Vince - General Discussion
Bulldozers. They will be there only a little while. After North Pines is dozed, then we start with Curry and plow that Use the tailings and scour out a couple spots outside the park for campers. And those campers bus in with our really kewl environmentally friendly natural gas/pedal power buses.by Vince - General Discussion

Years of poor management are burning down people's homes at South Lake Tahoe. I live in Sparks so I get to breathe it all in. There are other horribly managed spots where forest is overgrown to the point you can't walk between trees. This is not supposed to be this way. One area that comes to mind is the entire canyon leading through up to Mineral King. Other areas in Sequoia and Kings Canyon arby Vince - General Discussion
A week of contemplating now, I say just leave it the way it is and give good advice. I've done this twice myself: Arrive at the cables around 4 p.m. you will have the cables to yourself.by Vince - General Discussion
This thread, actually the entire forum, is cool-headed. OK, the right-winger that I am...let's just leave stuff the way it is. Now I feel better. Except for O'Shaugnessy. That's gotta go.by Vince - General Discussion
It's easy to overreact after an accident. Oh, there should be a law against <insert reactionary idea here> It was an accident and that's the end of that. Are changes necessary? The only one I'd buy into is a quota system to limit hikers on the 2.5-mile Half Dome trail, maybe...maybe not. Definitely more discussion is needed, mainly by cooler heads after a cooling-off period (there is a reby Vince - General Discussion
I camped out a couple weeks ago at Minaret Falls, in the canyon about 10 miles west of Mammoth Lakes. In the past when camping in late spring like that the skeeters are horrible, and I was bit twice just walking to the payment kiosk (about 100 yards). So out came the DEET and that was the end of that. The next day I sat around just enjoying the San Joaquin (and an empty campground!) and did not nby Vince - General Discussion
I imagine myself on the cables every day now that this has happened. Could any of you critique this web page (it's just one page, not a complete site), this is the view of me my brother took after he shook off a near heart attack going up and over 1/4 dome, traffic missing.
