I saw next to no wildlife my entire trip. Not a single deer, elk, etc.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I did a similar drive Katie. I'm from Ohio. If you want any other tips for awesome roads in other states I might have some. I agree with people saying that 120 is unmissable if it's open. There are so many astounding roads in CO, UT, and NV on the way.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

lol. That bear is making the same face that I make when my friends/family embarrass me.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Never run. You won't outrun a bear. Stand your ground or face them while slowly backing away. But they're mainly herbivores, so any attacks that happen are generally due to protection of cubs, provocation, or surprising them (they go into your tent to eat the apple under your pillow and they find you on top of the apple). In short, keep food out of your car while it's parked and keep foodby dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I "hiked" at Fort Funston, the Land's End Trail near the Golden Gate Bridge, Mt Davidson, and a few other city area hikes/walks. Outside of the city I ended up going on a hike through some redwoods near Larkspur, up the Sky Trail at Pt Reyes, and the Volvon Loop at Morgan Territory. I didn't have access to a very reliable car so we avoided doing anything more than an hour and a half oby dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Reservation bots. Similar to 'sniping' on Ebay. I'm not sure if it's still possible on Ebay, but programs for quicker-than-humanly-possible bids were rampant, and a similar program would work just fine for stealing reservations if security measures aren't put into place. The individuals doing this are, in a word, sad.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
p.s. - Today I think we're going to go to something closer to San Fran. Possibly a smaller redwood park along 101 or hwy 1 or maybe some beaches. We might do some of the hikes in Pt Reyes and then go to a beach or something, but once again we're open to ideas. Maximum of an hour and a half outside of the city for today's adventures I'd say.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Went to Morgan Territory yesterday and did the Volvon Loop. It was beautiful but almost no wild flowers. I'll post some pictures when I have more time. If I want to try to get out to Hite Cove and Yosemite tomorrow does anybody know if road conditions would turn us around? We'd be coming from Staples Ave, San Francisco and leaving early. We'd be driving a Civic and we don't own chains. Thby dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The day after a cold front rainstorm a good day for spotting Yosemite from a distance is it? Might have to try that... I have my Sony A55 and 300mm telephoto with me on this trip.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Damn it! I just got here yesterday.. Girlfriend is doing her job interview today, then we'll hopefully be seeing some Redwoods, waterfalls, wildflowers, etc. But if this shutdown happens, I guess we'll be using state parks to see all those things.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Yep. Dayhikes only. I might be able to get some camping equipment from my brother but it's not going to be highly portable, so I won't be camping far from where parking is available. So in other words, while I might spend two days at a park, it will be all dayhikes within that period due to lack of lightweight camping equipment. Also, I'll be staying with my brother in downtown San Francisco.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Uh oh. So many options and so little time to prepare and time to explore. I looked up some photos on Flickr or Hite Cove and it's stunning. hite cove trail -- looking up by Mrs Rachel, on Flickr I'm looking up all the suggested locations tonight, picking out my favorites with all your advice, and mapping them to see what's possible in the time we'll have on our trip.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Thanks for the additional input Dave I've never seen wildflowers in peak season during any of my trips, so hopefully I can this time.by dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thank you so much everybody! These are the kind of suggestions for which I was looking. I have a lot of things to look up tonight. The wildflowers hikes sound especially intriguing. To answer the questions: I haven't been to a single one of the aforementioned suggestions and I haven't been north of Muir Woods on 101. I see that there was a recent mudslide on Highway 1 near Big Sby dqniel - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Alrighty... I've been searching a lot of online guides, drawing on past experiences, and browsing through the plethora of "trip" threads on this site for the past month or so but are still overwhelmed. My girlfriend and I will be in San Francisco from April 6th til April 13th and are looking for some outdoorsy things to do. I think the article is suggesting that the reason for the Pine Bark Beetles is because of warmer temperatures. "Now their populations and pheromone levels are getting so high they can more easily reach epidemic levels and kill almost all adult trees," he said. "Less frost, combined with less snow favors heavier levels of bark beetle infestation. We're already seeing more insecby dqniel - General Discussion
I like them all, but the 5th one is especially good to me. The contrast of El Cap being so much brighter than the sky I think is what draws me to it. Who needs a DSLR for landscapes? What circular polarizer and red filter do you use?by dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

The ridge on that last shot is surreal. I love it. My friend got a similar shot to your first one of me walking along the ridge of a sand dune at a distance. I'd like to see the color versions if you have them. Nice shots as alwaysby dqniel - Photography advice, critiques and tutorials

Manufacturer, models, and condition. Some of the lenses could be used on modern cameras either with or without adapters depending on the age, and could still be quite desirable. I visited the Zion Mountain Ranch but didn't stay there. Prices are actually pretty affordable, especially in the off season. I did get food there, however, and it was great. Good view from their cabins I am very tempted to get one of their cabin packages for the off season as a graduation gift for my girlfriend and (who am I kidding) as a gift to myself. I'm still here. Started a new job and am settling in. Still have been working on my photos but not as many as the previous weeks. I think I'll be able to start posting more again soon I like the edit you did, subtle but brought a lot of detail back in the rocks and also brought back the deep blue in the sky instead of it being washed out.
