I speculate almost all of the ads are fake. They probably bait and switch. They say they are for a trade but then request payment. The other party then pays because it's so tempting. Many who respond to these ads are willing to pay anyway and don't care. I'm just flagging every single ad.by rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Totally agree. It's a ploy. The game is to make your post look like a trade. Then when you get a response you request compensation. If the other party complains, you just say now you don't want to really turn down the offer for those permits or campsites, do you? Bait and switch basically. I don't fall for these ploys. I just flag every ad.by rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

In northern Alberta right now, there are devastating forest fires and Slave Lake is burning like never before. Who would ever think that there would be forest fires in Alberta in the middle of May while snow keeps falling in Yosemite? In my opinion, it's global warming.by rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
A scalper could pose as a legitimate trader, get permits with more desirable dates, and then sell them for several hundred dollars. Also, scalpers are getting more creative and finding ways of advertising their services implicitly as opposed to explicitly i.e. trades for gift cards, etc. I have no doubt the scalpers will get even more creative in the coming weeks. That's why I'm flagging all of tby rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I flag all of them - buyers, sellers, and swappers. On Mt. Whitney, I don't think swappers are allowed. Somebody tried to swap Mt. Whitney permits on the Whitney Portal Store Board and was promptly chastized by the moderator. I think this whole Half Dome permit debacle and campsite mess is the result of poor judgement by the NPS. I also think Craigslist needs to get on board and start filtering tby rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I just flagged a whole bunch. There are too many. They just keep coming. This whole thing is disgusting. I wish craigslist would put a filter up so they don't even make it online. Also, has anyone looked at ebay lately?by rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I don't know how much acclimatization can be done at 3997'. How about a tiered system where they give out some permits online and the rest you can get by waiting in line the day before?by rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
If you're going back, a good choice might be Highway 4. This is one of those rare highways where you really get to see the landscape. What's interesting is how close Highway 4 comes to Highway 120 when it's near Copperopolis. However, that's about as close to Yosemite as it ever gets. It then veers to the northeast and goes practically all the way to the Carson Valley in Nevada. Quite a fascinatiby rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Absolutely not. It's not like backpacking. You still have your car or RV. Basically, you just find yourself a nice spot to set up a tent and that's it. You bring your own water and dig a hole when you have to go to the bathroom. Unless you have a RV and then you can also take a hot shower. Don't quote me on this, but I think the stay limit is 14 days in the national forest.by rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

At least you can get one the night before. Question is can you call NRRS late at night? Otherwise you have to have a computer with internet reception. Kind of difficult if you're in the park. I think the NPR is wise to raise the quota to 400. I think Half Dome is a great place to deposit the lion's share of hikers. It keeps the rest of the backcountry quieter. I don't like paying $1.50, however.by rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

This aging group of scientists may go the way of the bristlecones because there's so little money being spent in this area. There are hardly any good paying jobs in this area so few young scientists are studying this. When you have to study calculus, statistics, organic chem, biology, even computers and some physics, hey why would a young scientist with student loans in this economy want to riskby rightstar76 - General Discussion

The day you went was a light day so you could have showed up much later and still got the permit you wanted. However, you never know how many people are going to show up which is why it was a good idea for you to get there at 4 am.by rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Brake shops and auto mechanics must love the old road because it brings them so much business. I once roared up that hill and my heat gauge shot up. Going down you can really do your brakes in. It does take a fraction of the time the main highway does though.by rightstar76 - General Discussion
That's hard for me to believe. I think it depends on how fast you go and how steep the trail is. If you're walking one mile an hour on a flat trail through the forest carrying a light pack, I highly doubt you'd burn anything at all.by rightstar76 - General Discussion

Great suggestion basilbop. I am going to hike to Nelson and Reymann the next time I'm in the area. Now I have a question. If you hike in that way and stay in Vogelsang the first night isn't that against the rules? I thought you could only stay in Vogelsang the first night if you got a Rafferty Creek permit. It would seem only logical if you got the Nelson Lake permit that's where you'd have to stby rightstar76 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Expand your horizons and be open to doing other routes. It will reduce the level of stress. One year we showed up at 4:30 am. We were not the first in line so we had to pick what was left over which was Sunrise Lakes. The first couple miles gave our legs and lungs a decent workout but the view to Half Dome before the first lake was worth it. We then went to Merced Lake and Vogelsang and TM.
