Thank you for your detailed trip report! Thank you especially for taking the time editing the photos to point out peaks, and for putting in pics of plants and their names! Helps fill in blanks! I find it great that you were just a tad to the north of where we'd be just a few days after you. We camped around 11,000' all three nights (Aug 28-31) we were out in the John Muir Wilderness, and weby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Wow! Thank you for writing this! Hopefully it'll warm some hearts, including a couple of wacky birds I know! I haven't been involved on a site in years... This one is definitely special. I, for one, am looking forward to fall. Days may be a bit shorter, bit the lighting and temps are great. Lovely hiking weather! And depending on conditions, great backpacking still to be had! And no, I see the use trails and ducks all over the backcountry.. it's just that somehow the SHR bits... I just expect more (more = no ducks, no trash), you know? Unrealistic? Probably. I realize people have been all over in the backcountry. I just wish they would be half as courteous as you - and clean up after themselves. I'm with you... I want to go back right now too! I can't believe I won't be able to see the Sierras again until October! Enjoy them for me - as many of you who can get out there!by JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

QuoteAndrewFIt's all good. That's the exact phrase chick-on uses! I say it differently and with many many more words! QuoteAndrewFI remember thinking there wasn't much impact at all, except for an obvious trail through the sand on the north side of Feather Pass. Years ago, our first section of the SHR was from Thousand Island past Catherine, through Bench Canyon, past Blue Lake and into Yby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Basilbop and I cranked down tight on all but one peak, which allowed me to crawl in/out without the difficulty I'd feared. We've read the same issues, but it was worth it to find out if the trade-off between the headroom of our Mid would be made up for with the wind/storm-worthiness... and so far, I'd have to say YES - for me. I don't much like crawling in and out of shelters, but I think I can mby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Quotechick-onI need to dig up a stuffed animal and go hiking with you guys sometime. Best be a cute animal. That Crab, now named ACE, was adorable, and was riding on the top of tomdisco's pack! Super-cute!by JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotechick-onYou have no idea how much I appreciate the company and the utter appreciation, respect, and awe for The Sierra that you two have. I am so humbled to read this as I feel the same about you! Sharing the trips with you this year has been an utter joy. In short, sentiments reciprocated! Staying taut helps it stay quiet in windy conditions. I am a huge fan of the cuben! The light sage green color isn't bad, though I'd prefer yellow! I also liked how we figured out how to relatively easily convert from big wind shelter for 3 for dinner, to a tighter pitch for 2 for night with strong winds. I love our big mid for space, but I must say I did fine with the TrailStar and am a huge faby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
My two cents... On resupply/layovers and re-entry... I recall having a hard time in the time-warp zone known as Muir Trail ranch when I re-supplied for the final time for my third and final leg to Whitney & the Portal during my two-week JMT hike in 2010. 3 hours just went poof.. and I felt a bit weird being that close to all those people, and the hustle and bustle, and computer time... andby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I'll try to add some "color" to this report.. It was a very fun trip, with many jokes. Lots revolving around potty trowels and cold water "shrinkage" and bear can envy. There were times I almost spit out my food laughing - and I'm very protective of my food! Oh yeah, enjoying food was a source of fun too... We use: MSR Aquatabs in camp to purify 3+ liters for camp/next morning AquaMira Frontier Pro* for on the go, scoop and drink. Screws on nicely to Aquafina bottles Steripen Freedom** for more guzzlable water breaks when conditions permit (no skeeters) Used to use Chlorine dioxide tabs, Aquatabs don't taste as strongly. Hmm. Second story I've heard in past two weeks about a mountain lion "stalking" a hiker. This one a bit different, first story out of Twin Lakes area, actual hiker walking kept seeing a mountain lion following him. Other guys with me heard more, maybe they can elaborate. What's with this? I've never worried about them in the backcountry before, I just assumed I've been seen, and theby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Dunno when I'll be able to post. Catalonian Burro didn't join, had to go home. He was missed! We hiked out last night, and spent the night in Lee Vining. Had breakfast with Chick-on this morning and he went directly home, while we checked out Tuolumne Meadows. Very eerie. Clouds and smoke mix have a very late fall feel, but the smell reminded you what was what. Would not want to hike in that!by JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Thank you for posting this! From Lower Ottoway onwards, you did the trip Basilbop and I wanted to do over the 4th of July weekend, but my ankle was too squawky back then... So thanks for showing me the conditions this year! Wow on the blowdowns and bridge damage, though it looks like the river was quiet, probably crossable without bridge? I just got off the phone with the Bishop wilderness permit office. I was calling for a this-year, non-JMT reason.. but she was so friendly, I thought I'd ask... I'd heard that people were leaving their WAG bags on the trail and it was getting pretty bad. She told me she had just been talking to the ranger up there (as in this past Sunday she was on Whitney - scooting down from the storm), andby JustKeepWalking - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Awesome trip! One day wonder! Woo hoo! Good on you for the perseverance, glad it all went smoothly! Wish your friends would have listened to your sage advice, based on real-world past experience, but hey... And then you have to ask that difficult question. Quotechick-onAnd wutt great attitudes. Thanks, Chick-on! The only place my attitude suffered was when we were in those bushes at my head level, where I couldn't see my feet well and was walking on branches when Basilbop called to me to look up and smile.
