Last year, a death in the family postponed a trip by a week and cost me a Half Dome permit. But, as mrcondron said, the park didn't go anywhere.by AnotherDave - General Discussion

A year ago, while descending subdome, I met a guy who looked like he was having a heart attack. Seated on a rock so others could pass, he puffed, wheezed and had trouble unscrewing the lid to a water bottlle. His heart pounded so hard, I thought subdome was about to become a pile of sand. Turns out, this (large) gent had attempted North Dome with his 9 year old daughter the day before. Sheby AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I plan to spend the summer turning the legs into steel springs so that when I get to the park in September, the miles will be effortless. 5 1/2 months and counting.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
It is quite possible that getting in the game early has no advantage and that I just got lucky the previous times. Still, I'd rather get on the list early. Good luck getting the date you hope for and have a safe and enjoyable hike.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
My personal experience with the Half Dome permit lottery is this: I've applyed for a permit two different years, and done so on the first day that the lottery was open. Both times, I've gotten the date I requested. If there is an advantage to waiting till the last minute to apply for a permit on a specific date, I don't know what that could be. But, you suit yourself.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
The lottery is open till the last day of March, but if you have a date in mind for the hike, make your reservation for that date early. If 225 permits are available for each date, and you enter the lottery after 225 others have reserved 'your' day, you will be out of luck.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. The bottom of the cable route is obscured by subdome, but the upper part is visible. I'll post a photo, if I can compute how.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
With binoculars, you can see the cables before getting to subdome and without heading towards Clouds Rest. Just head up the Half Dome trail till the trees thin out a bit, and you can't miss it. Quite a sight.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So, some guy takes his board to the top of Half Dome, (cables: DOWN) then picks a line between the cables and the graveyard, rides from top to bottom (twice), and the only proof we have is a photo in which the alleged daredevil looks EXACTLY like a bare patch of rock? Perhaps the next time he shreds Half Dome, he'll do so on the west side, so we can all watch from Patterson, CA.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

It might be too obvious, but some of these campgrounds are close to some of the more popular hiking trails in the park. Camp 4 is close to Upper Yosemite Falls trail, the May and April campgrounds are close to Mist trail, etc. 4 Mile trail to Glacier Point is a great one, whenever it is open.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Several years ago, I went to Kings Canyon/Sequoia NP and went to both the Grant Grove and the Grove of the Giants. Of course, the immensity of these trees leaves the viewer dumbstruck, but I couldn't help but feel some sympathy for other trees in the area. I mean, there were fir, pine and other conifers along side the sequoias that were 10-12 feet thick, or more. If these gigantic trees had tby AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Hiking = fun thing to do. In June, the waterfalls should be at full gallop, so any hike that gets you a view of them would be worth doing. Mist Trail is the obvious choice, with Vernal and Nevada. This will be crowded, but just push people out of the way. If you only have time for one hike, give the 4 Mile Trail to Glacier Point a look. Thanks for all the input. I stayed at Curry last year, and got along OK. But, what cost $89 last year is $124 this year. For a hiker, Curry location is tough to beat, and the place is both cool and creepy. (Think of the damage that one dude in a hockey mask with an axe could do) I don't need fabulous accommodations like the Ahwahne (sp), so Curry or Housekeeping will probably do it this yeaby AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. In September, I did this hike for the second time, going JMT up and Mist down. Of course, it is a challenging hike, mainly from subdome on, but don't be overly intimidated. If you can go up 4 Mile Trail or Upper Yosemite Falls, you probably have the physical goodies for Half Dome. Side note: While ascending in the LYV area, I ingested a pouch of Gatorade Pre-game fuel.
