I am gobbling up all the Diving Board info that this forum has to offer. Hoping to get there IF this years trip actually happens in September. 33 days and counting. Maybe.by AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I admire your good judgment at the cables. That's no place to be in foul weather. You made the right call. As for hiking alone - I've been to most of the usual spots in/around the Valley, and always hike alone. No whining kids. Nobody making cell phone calls. No arguments. Nobody getting tired. And, nobody to dispute the big stories you tell when you get home. If you stay on marked traiby AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Since first setting foot on the Mist Trail several years ago, I've been fascinated about the hiking trails in Yosemite. Who built them, how many people were involved, what equipment did they use, etc. Last September, I went to the Ansel Adams Gallery and asked some guru for any written info on the subject. He knew of none in print form. The quest continues.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Never been to Granite lake, but I bet it is full of hard water.by AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Last year, while hiking to CR from Yosemite Valley, I felt a touch of altitude sickness coming on. Somewhere, I'd read that keeping your mind busy is one way to stay sharp, even when feeling sluggish due to the thinning air. So, I tried to do this math problem in my head: How many scoops of ice cream does Yosemite Valley hold? I didn't know what constituted a "scoop", so the anby AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I don't have any advice on coolers, but hope you'll favor us with a trip report/photos on the upcoming trip.by AnotherDave - General Discussion
ANY suggestions? OK, how about Sierra Pt? Not a long hike, and not much on water crossings, but it ends at one of the coolest places in the park. More of a scramble than a hike. Crowds won't be a problem. Steep and fairly difficult, but highly rewarding. They will remember this one for a long time.by AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

In regards to the view from atop Half Dome.... A Yosemite employee once told me that under the right conditions, you could see the ocean from Half Dome's summit. Well, I have been up there 3 times and can file this report: You CANNOT see the ocean - the Empire State Building is in the way. They won't get me with that one again.by AnotherDave - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
We are told that it doesn't matter if you enter the lottery the minute it opens or a minute before it closes - your chances of getting a permit are equal. Well.......I have entered the pre-season Half Dome permit lottery 4 times. Each time, I have made my request within an hour of when the lottery opened, and each time I have been successful in getting the date that was my first choice. Like every other place in Yosemite, Sierra Pt. is my favorite place in Yosemite. Really enjoy the last bit, where you round the last rock and the railing finally comes into view. Spectacular hike/scramble and more nice pictures.by AnotherDave - General Discussion

I've been hoping to fine another "off the map" hike in the Valley area, and this looks like an amazing one. I intended to do El Cap/Eagle Peak/Eagle Tower last Sept., but high heat and potential lack of a water source in that area caused the hike to be scrapped. Those footprints are certainly ominous. Just when you're sure you're all alone....by AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
The hike you speak of is one of my favorites in the Valley area. Not brutal in difficulty, but great sights to be seen at almost every turn. I've done it from both directions, and find the 4 mile trail is at its best for the uphill part of the hike. The scenery gets better as you go up, and you get Vernal Fall near the hikes end. Hard to imagine Glacier Pt. without a crowd.by AnotherDave - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
