A coyote scared of a car psshhh This one walked as if it owned the road haha. Glad he was in the proper lane!by KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
As much as I love Yosemite, I have to say Denali and Wrangell St Elias are the top 2 for me. Grand Teton would be 3rd (had always wanted to see the tetons since I was young so I might be biased). Yosemite for would be 4th and SEKI 5th. Still I visit Yosemite the most!by KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Hey David, We wanted to try for observation point but it was just too late in the day to go for it. Due to the extreme cold of the previous night, we stayed in our sleeping bags till 11... hahah. Have you considered doing the west rim as an overnighter from Lava point and stopping by Angels landing from there? We only managed to do day hikes at arches around landscape arch and had a blast.by KevinD - General Discussion
If you need an AirBNB place outside of the park, I have a few recommendations. I'm always stunned by the price difference in AirBNB when compared to California! We stayed at a place in hurricane that only charged $35 for the entire basement/lower lever of the house! 3 bedrooms/2br. Was a nice and cozy place to stay before venturing into the below zero conditions.by KevinD - General Discussion
50 people!? Dang! When I went to Crocker a few weeks there were only about 2-3 other tents haha. Glad you had fun out there! -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
We were going to try CR in late March if you want to join us. We might go for a loop like Vengence but that depends on the conditions.by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
When you say instep area do you mean the area around there the instep loop ties too? I know some folks have reinforced this area by taping the insidesby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
They came in! Yea...I can see the hook being a bit difficult to put on and off in the cold but so far I'm liking them!by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey Folks! Was wondering if any of you folks were interested in doing a meet-up event like how the High Sierra Topix forum does? Basically they set a certain location that is somewhere in the backcountry of the high sierra for a meet up for the day. Anyone whose interested can use their own way of getting to that point. http://www.highsierratopix.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13203by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Have a great and safe adventure! Looking forward to seeing the tr! -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I have heard of Gaia and some people love it. I personally use Maloo and download maps to it using a software on the PC. If I want to mark trails, I just do it on caltopo and export the gpx/kml file and send it to the phone. If you're interested in it I can show you. I was like you and bought the Lumia 635 after basilpop brought it up in the REI thread haha. It's been serving me awesome! Spareby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
If conditions look good I'll be heading up maybe for a day trip.by KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I used to carry around an MSR avalanche shovel but forgot on one trip and decided to buy the snow claw at the REI in fresno. Fits PERFECT in the mesh pocket on my osprey pack. Also very lightweight and does a great job of digging out a cathole or luxury snow kitchen. Also makes for a great snow stack too! Highly recommend it if you aren't traveling a lot in avalanche-prone areas. -Keviby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Using mine with a compass + map every 400 meters or so, I generally can get about 4.5 days of use out of it. But that is if I'm bushwhacking in an area I don't know. The longest I've gotten out of it was on a 7 day trip in oregon. Mainly used it every hour or so and used the compass the rest of the way. I also leave the device on battery saver mode (lumia 635) so it doesn't track where I go.by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Can vouch for the phone gps! Been using mine for snow travel and its been a great tool. Seems to be as accurate as the gps in my inreach SE. I just use it though to determine position on a map and use a compass/topo map from there to navigate to points.by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey Sonic, Someone can correct me here If I'm wrong but the yose bears are pretty damn shy. You shouldn't have any problems with bears in the valley at this time. Just don't leave your food by itself! Microspikes/Yak Trax will work fine with your boots. They are like less aggressive mini crampons! -Kevinby KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. JKW, Just ordered a pair! Thanks for the recommendation! Can't wait to try em out! -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotesonics Hello all I just moved to central valley area of CA, and I'm glad that now I have a chance to explore the Yosemite area time to time. My wife is also greatly excited to visit there, and she wants to go there within a few weeks. http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/valleyhikes.htm Are there any good combination of hike route for winter? With beautiful scenery, and low difficuby KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
thanks for the input! Checked out those MSR pans at REI and felt they were too thin. Might just go with a heavier but thicker ikea pan! -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Was looking up videos for the GCT and found this.... On a side note, do any of you guys know when it's a safe time to do all the stream crossings in the Glen Aulin and GCT area? I remember some folks using the water level in hetchy...but can't remember the exact number and such.by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Just curious to what size that pan is? Considering getting one myself and saw that MSR had a 7 and 9 inch one. Might be able to put the 9 inch model over the lid of the bear can for easier packing..by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for sharing! Trip looked great except for the crossings. I'd hate to have wet boots in the winter haha. I find that I have to wash down my goretex boots with soap after every trip to prevent the liners from wearing down. My other boots liners failed after 2 trips. So far my current ones replaced on warranty have been going strong for the season thankfully. -Kevinby KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Ouch on the fall! Hope all is okay!by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Would also add that most of the bear boxes might have a ton of snow on em! Had to thaw the locking mechanism to open it at camp 4!by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
haha I look forward to them! They get me excited for future trips! Where are you guys planning on going next?by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
When are we going to see the trip report for this trip? ?by KevinD - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotehikerchick395 My choice is a plate of fries and a beer at Whitney Portal Store then Pizza Factory in Lone Pine (and more beer) I've only tried Pizza Factory once and the wait for the pizza was quite long....and pricey! I'll give em one more try this season!by KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quoteeeek QuoteDaveLooks to me like they only hold the TM for clothing, not hotels. Clother, mugs, etc. Which means nobody else can put Yosemite National Park on such things. Seems wrong to me. Lots of gas station merchandise would go against that TM hahaby KevinD - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
