Post hike thoughts: We came down Lewis Creek. It added some elevation and distance to an already big day but it was spectacular! Amazing views! Water was a non-issue. There were plenty of water all the way to the valley. It had rained a couple days before but the water sources looked to be available year round. The distance was fine, but I severely underestimated the elevation loss. I was soreby DantheMan - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Second question, would you continue down Fletcher Creek to Merced Lake or go over the pass and down through Lewis Creek? and why (other than elevation)?by DantheMan - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I'm hiking from TM to Happy Isles via Rafferty Creek this weekend. I see that I'm hiking along water sources every bit of the way. I'm only planning on carrying two 500ml of water with me and topping off along the hike. I was just curious to see if Rafferty Creek or Fletcher Creek had water year round. I can do the spur trails to the lakes along the way if needed. I haven't been up there this timby DantheMan - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
My son and I climbed Half Dome via Snake Dike last week. Because we already had our harnesses on, we used protection. We used two 120cm slings girth hitched to our harness belay loop. We clove hitched a wire carabiner to each sling to keep the carabiner from sliding on the sling. As we went down, one carabiner was attached to the cable while the other dangled. When we would reach a post we wouldby DantheMan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

This may be a dumb question, but here goes... Are the bear boxes in the backpackers campground in Merced Lake HSC open and available for use year round?by DantheMan - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
http://www.modbee.com/2013/06/02/2743569/sacramento-teen-swept-over-yosemite.html Sad to hear these stories. Unfortunately, all too common. Correction, Nevada Falls not Vernal Falls as reported in the Modesto Bee. http://www.nps.gov/yose/parknews/visitor-swept-over-nevada-fall-in-yosemite-national-park.htmby DantheMan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Saw this HERE: "Starting this weekend, you can access more of Yosemite Valley on the free shuttle bus when the route expands to include the loop to El Capitan. Stops include: El Cap picnic area, El Cap Meadow and the Four Mile trail head."by DantheMan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I saw those dates on the NPS site. I didn't know how accurate that was. Last time I was in the valley in 2011, we rode the El Cap shuttle on Memorial Day weekend. I was wondering if that was going to be the case this year.by DantheMan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Any body know if the shuttle is running? Or when it might begin running?by DantheMan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
My wife and I did a backpacking trip to Ventana Wilderness back in 2011. We ran accross Andrew Garfield (The Social Network / The Amazing Spiderman). He was bp'ing solo and was on his way out. He was a pretty cool guy and gave us a minute of his time. It was such a random place to meet a celebrity. We were caught off gaurd so much we forgot to ask for a picture. I think a sign would've helped in having some doubt creep in the mind of anyone wanting to cross the bridge with those conditions. If I put myself in the hikers shoes, considering the alternative routes out, I think I may have been inclined to make the same call. A sign though, would perhaps help me listen to my rational side. I saw this first hand last week at lower yosemite falls. I hadn't beenby DantheMan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I always repackage the MH meals. A 2 serving package is too much food for me. I always split those in half in freezer ziplocks. In ziplocks, you can squeeze a lot more food than in the original packaging. I keep one of the foil packets to use for reheating.by DantheMan - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
