Sorry I missed y'all too. And I missed the snack stand, closed before I got back. Got to time my starts and finishes better.by Klas - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
March 27th, 2015. I was in the valley. But I only had one day to get out. Followed the Muir Trail up to Sunrise, hooked around to Sunrise Lakes, came back over Clouds Rest and down to the Valley. 12.5 hours car to car, maybe 28 miles. There was still good snow at Sunrise Lakes. But the views of the high country were dry dry dry. Just want to share what I saw. I do not know who those trails are, but I hear they are kind folks. I can tell you that you will not encounter any difficulties from snow on your route, it is all passable. You may step on a few patches of snow, and you may wish the snow was more firm, but that should be the worst of it. Have fun.by Klas - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Finally getting out this year, departed TM last Friday June 6th... and reached Vogelsong Lake. That's where I was around 3:00pm, when it hit. So I pitched the tarp in the middle of a nice windy snow storm. Around 6:00pm it cleared up for dinner. Next morning I set out to climb Vogelsong, from the Pass, via the East Ridge. Which had nice views. Looking over to Florenceby Klas - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Great report and info, thanks! Now, I've got a question, please. As you might remember I went up there a couple of years ago, but I took the south shore of the river. (here: http://yosemitenews.info/forum/read.php?3,41516) On that trip, there were a couple of moments when I looked across the river, saw some steep features, and thought to myself, "sure glad I'm not trying to go up onby Klas - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
The smoke was interesting. Sometimes it was not there at all. Other times it filled in everywhere. The days were generally real hot. If the smoke arrived early in the day, before the afternoon winds, then the smoke appeared to amplify the heat of the sun, and it felt like I was being cooked in a smoke house. Hot and stuffy, not real comfortable. In the afternoon, the winds usually grew sby Klas - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Sorry I was not looking for a marker on Long, and did not notice one. The summit area is relatively large and there was another party up there at the same time so I could have missed it. Looks like Lyell Fork of the Merced is popular this year... Was supposed to climb Foerster on a trip 2 years ago, but difficulties arose. So last week I was out there for a few days alone, to finish what had been started. I apologize that half of this trip occurs outside the park. Departed from Fernandez Trail head, to... The lower canyon is not too wet, just some muddy spots on the trail, but no concern about finding a dry pitch. Soon enough the fog of bugs will be thicker than the mud...by Klas - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Memorial day weekend attempt on Lyell, thought I'd just share a few pics to show conditions. No new territory here, but good times. Snow line right at 10,500' and the snow excellent. Disappointed to get rejected by the summit plateau rock face, our party did not find it welcoming: ledges all covered and rock all icy. On a previous late-summer climb we enjoyed the summit scramble very much. Buby Klas - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I figure I can't be the only one wondering exactly how much snow is still around... so here you go: photos truth is I actually brought my skis, but left them in the car. someone did ski the east chute recently, tracks looked maybe a couple of days old. enjoy.by Klas - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Actually, while planning ahead I had seriously considered the ridge over Mt. Raymond. Ultimately I went with the river... I would like to try the Mt. Raymond route, the ridge looked walkable from Crescent Lake, have you done it? Regarding BM6402, it is super. Thanks for the great picture. Yes I was imagining those slabs in the image might be the way around high water. They are pretty clear in the satellite view too. The reason for Chiquito is to continue on with Redtop-Sing-Gale-TripleD-Post.by Klas - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Thanks. Yeah, that water stuff might be in the way. I'm planning a long journey in early August. One segment is from The Valley to Chiquito Pass, and I'm trying to choose an interesting, westside route. What if I just followed the south shore of the river, up from Wawona, so I wouldn't have to cross it. Those squeeze spots, cliffs, and bushes still might be prohibitive. I am looking for information about this route: Hiking the South Fork Merced River upstream from Wawona to Gravelly Ford. If anyone has traveled this route, I would very much appreciate any descriptions or information you can provide. It appears on the map as if there may be difficulties. Climbed Hoffmann on Sunday the 3rd. Road was not open, and mostly snow covered. Trail from parking lot to lake was 90% snow, and not clearly easy to follow. Other parties had difficulties.
