<<P.S. Bears do not hibernate. They just get kinda sleepy.>> Not sure what you mean here. Hibernation is not sleep physiologically. I went up one early May about 15 years ago without extraordinary problems or special equipment. I have noticed recently that the granite has become rather slick due to the unmentionably large crowds that now climb Half Dome during open season and have not tried it recently without cables. Perhaps that fact (slick granite) has made the climb more difficult now than in the distant past without theby Frank Furter - General Discussion

There are several variables to consider: handgun vs rifle/shotgun; loaded vs unloaded ; concealed vs openly displayed; public vs private; in a locked or unlocked container; in area that is incorporated vs unincorporated. After living in Alaska for 3 years and Montana for 20 years, I understand the value of a backcountry gun but I am concerned that weapons carried more liberally in the backcountry where grizzlies or polar bears are present would tend to encourage sloppy technique in food or consumable storage. I suspect the park rules will default to the state where the park is located for ease and consistency of enforcement. >>I have been told that if someone is giving you trouble usually they are gutless and all you have to do is show a weapon and they'll go away. << You need to read the laws on brandishing and assault. Confessions: I was so proud of my posted picture that I didn't realize I had posted the thumbnail rather than the actual picture. It appears that best picture size would be something like at least 400X400 pixels. That size can be checked when you right click on the picture (or if using photobucket the box that provides photo info) to get the URL. My ignorance is more profound than that, but the fog is clearing. I can paste a URL but that implies that the pictures are on the web. I am assuming that personal photos must then be posted on the web somewhere to accomplish that. How or where does one upload the images to the web? Do you need a personal webpage? I was going to write "I am probably the only one who doesn't know how to do this" but I realized that usually when I preface a question with that, I am often with the silent majority. Regarding the bear boxes, I have been repeatedly amazed and my faith in humans bolstered by my experiences with leaving food and equipment in bear boxes at backcountry trailheads in the park, even those that are fairly busy. It is strangely old-fashioned, but I haven’t experienced any problems like: 1. boxes left open 2. locks on boxes containing my equipment 3. theft of equipment I am sureby Frank Furter - General Discussion
Interesting article suggesting problem bears do not necessarily learn from related bears: When Bears Steal Human Food, Mom's Not To Blame ScienceDaily (May 10, 2008) — Researchers from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) found that the black bears that become habituated to human food and garbage may not be learning these behaviors exclusively from their mothers, as widely assumed. Not sure why you are not bringing food or supplies, but on alternative option is to ship to yourself at the post office in Tuolumne Meadows (located near the store). It is my experience that the drivers often accomodate requests for special stops. I have not tried to "flag one down" between posted shuttle stops however. A couple other comments: The unique geographical feature of Yosemite Valley (being almost completely enclosed) reduces the range for bears. Although food service may exist in other national parks, it does not occur under the physical restriction imposed by the Valley. I realize this may be controversal, but I would argue that the commercial operations in the park are a major part of the bear problem but the blame is usually placed on the tourist. The primary objective behind the bear indoctrination program concerns not tempting the very smart bears. Great emphasis is placed on the ability of a bear to “see evidence” of food—such as candy bars on the front seat of a car or ( in a vending machine). If no bear has broken into a vending machine, why provide that temptation? Isn’t the park supposed to be proactive in this process?by Frank Furter - General Discussion
After suffering the standard lecture on bears and food storage and signing a statement of understanding to rent a tent at Curry Village, I was amused to notice that there is a outdoor candy bar vending machine with 30-40 candy bars behind ?glass or plastic with food plainly visible outside at the Curry Village Pavillion.
