Thanks for the detailed report. Hoping to get up there Mon.-Weds. Was there the first few days of Nov. 2 years ago and was up there the last few days of Oct. last yea,r and both trips were spectacular. Was worried about the wind damage but it sounds like things are still looking good. Tomby mtn man - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Can't remember where I read it, but somewhere on one of the official Yosemite Government sites it specifically addresses weddings in Yosemite and it specifically bans wedding receptions from the campgrounds.by mtn man - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
So how do the Valley colors look now after the wind storm? Pics.?by mtn man - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Anybody been in the Valley since Weds.'s storm? How are the Fall colors looking, especially in that big grove of Oak trees on the west end of Cook's meadow near the old Superintendents cabin? Did the storm strip the trees of leaves? Tomby mtn man - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Absolutely do the Congress trail near Lodgepole/Big Forest.by mtn man - General Discussion
Having worked with the public for 40 years I have no doubt that these complaints are very possibly true.by mtn man - General Discussion
Let's make it 100 posts (I think this one will do it!). Oops, I don't have anything to say...........by mtn man - General Discussion
Quotemrcondron If you have a car then two days just driving to places and looking at things will use all the time of the two days. Things to see: Valley Floor (can take an entire day) Hetch Hetchy Mariposa Grove Museum at Wawona Glacier Point Road Drive across Highway 120 to the park east boundary Tuolumne Meadows If you do take a driving tour be sure to have a list of places to stop,by mtn man - General Discussion
Some day in the future people will reflect back saying "it's too bad cell phones in the old days were still line of sight radio transmissions instead of satellite transmissions as they are now (approx 2012 or so). So many more people could have been rescued had they had satellite phones." Satellite communications for cell phones will happen eventually (at a reasonable cost) which wiby mtn man - General Discussion
Quoteeeek Haven't found a year-by-year summary yet. But I did find this: In 1994 there were 17 deaths and 231 searches and rescues. In 1995, 18 visitors died and 188 searches and rescues were performed. There's a book out called "Death in Yosemite" which has some pretty accurate statistics,. Don't know how up to date it is but it is within the last few years.by mtn man - General Discussion
Does anyone else remember that up until a couple of decades ago Death Valley was closed during the summer months? Am I imagining that?by mtn man - General Discussion
This brings up a question of whether people, such as in the Snake River resuce, should be charged for the rescue when their own irresponsible actions (no paddles, no life jackets) causes Govt. agencies to use personnel and equipment to rescue them. Does anyone know if people who are rescued in Yosemite by Helicopter are charged and if so is it based on the degree of recklessness exhibited byby mtn man - General Discussion
Good job!! Keep up the good work.by mtn man - General Discussion
Reminds me of a book called "Travels with Charlie" (Steinbeck?) about a cross country trip by an old man and a dog in one of the original camper trucks.by mtn man - General Discussion
How about a second set of cables...one way up and one way down.....The crowds are going to come anyways, might as well turn the one way street into a two way street.by mtn man - General Discussion
There was one of these set up out on one of the islands at Happy Isles a couple of years ago.by mtn man - General Discussion
Quoteeeek Do they rent camping trailers like they do RVs? Pretty sure some places do. I've seen pop up tent trailers with RV rental insignas on them, but haven't seen too many.by mtn man - General Discussion
Wow, that was a recipe for disaster. Carrying that much gas is a bit excessive! The road form Chinquapin to the tunnel is overall fairly steep when pulling a trailer. I have learned to shift down into second gear in that stretch when I pull my 24 ft. trailer. I had, once before when I was driving that stretch still in drive (3rd gear), really heated up my trailer brakes and by the time I wasby mtn man - General Discussion

Figured the river is pretty fast right now, was hoping someone knew where there might bay a little eddy or slow part of the river along the shore. Yeah 18 and going with the parents is a little tough, but for displinary reasons we can't leave him at home.by mtn man - General Discussion

Oh I agree about there being better things to do in Yosemite, but my 18yr. old son has become bored with Yosemite (We've taken him there every summer since he was born), but he likes to fish so I was looking for something to keep him happy for a few hours while we are up there next week.by mtn man - General Discussion
Antbody know of any Trout fishing spots west of El Portal in the Merced? Do they even stock trout in this area? Thanks, Tomby mtn man - General Discussion
Quotemtn man Getting back to the "Last of the Mohicans", I'm pretty sure the scene towards the end where the Huron chief is telling them all that one of the girls has to die, if you look up above him you'll see Yosemite Falls. (Bad sentence structure, I know) Now I have a question, what scene from The Great Outdoors was filmed in Yosemite? Lots of it was filmed at Bass Lake.by mtn man - General Discussion
Wasn't there a Park Ranger killed along the Tioga Pass road within the last 15 yrs? Maybe he was wounded. I seem to remember a story about it: A Park Ranger pulled over to question a pedestrian along the road and he pulled a gun and shot the Ranger. Anyone else remember that incident?by mtn man - General Discussion

We can get reception there...we watched the finals last year. Some stations have gone to digital already and the rest are doing it 6/12. I was just wondering if any of you live in the Valley and would know if they are still on analog as I'd rather not pack the TV if they have already gone didital.by mtn man - General Discussion
It's only because my wife is a basketball fan (Lakers) and there will be a couple of The Finals while we are there. Otherwise the TV would stay home.by mtn man - General Discussion
Does anyone know if the over the air TV broadcasts have changed yet for those few stations that are receivable by antenna in the Valley? Tomby mtn man - General Discussion
As of a couple of weeks ago when I was there, yes, the large shower house up behind the ampitheater are roped off and closed.by mtn man - General Discussion
