Hey I'm gonna try to get to Camp 4 in the morning of Wednesda, August 17th driving from Bridgeport. How early do you guys think I should get there/what are my chances of actually getting a spot? Also, if that fills up too quickly what other campgrounds should I check in the valley? Thanks!by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotebill-e-g I think they ARE transferable. No problem. They look like this: They also put up signs at the trailhead: If anyone wants 4 for the 13th.... Triskaidekaphobia?by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Dude- Thats the same trip (1st backpacking trip) that I took many years ago with the local YMCA, at the age of 12. Great memories to this day. I think that you will be fine with trail crossings and water by then. Three cautions for you and your kids...first, bears, but you probably know about that through the permitting process and having the required bear cans for food storage will resolve aby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I don't know of the ridge that you mention, but check out the "Mathes Crest" post a couple of pages back on forum. A great (although long) day hike..the post even includes a map and pictures. Its a great area, enjoy it!by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Quotesubflexa I love hiking, love summits. Hate heights. Actually, heights are fine, it's the falling off heights that is the problem. Then don't fall! Seriously, I would think that a harness on Angel's Landing would be more trouble than its worth. Unlike Half Dome, where it can be said that there is an "up" cable (on the right as you go up) and a "down" cable (again, oby Bearproof - General Discussion
So what was your route to get there? Seems like a heck of a place to get to this time of year.by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I was through there some years ago in early September (coming from north to south on PCT from the other side of Burro Pass). We decided to not camp at Retrun Creek, but to push on and look for water and a campsite in the area that you describe. It was dry as a bone (again, early September). Had to keep going all the way to Glen Aulin HSC. It was a long, dry day.by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
You might try the Hetch Hetchy area...its lower, for the most part, and has a lot of south facing slopes. Its probably below the snow line, depending on which trail you might take. It will be really wet at this time of year. And watch the weather closely, wherever you go...more storms seem to be on the way.by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Wow, all great thoughts and comments...as always, the devil is in the details I was up the cables on the last Sunday that they were open in 2009...early October. Started at Glacier Point with a buddy who had never done Half Dome and wanted to do it for his 50th birthday. It was the first time I had been up mid-day on a weekend in probably 30 years. It was ugly, and I would never want to do itby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I am also heading up this weekend from the Bay Area. Like you, I usually take 120, but if there is any significant winter weather I will usually take the "river road", i.e. Highway 140 from Merced/Mariposa. It generally stays a lot lower in elevation (less than 3000 ft elevation vs more than 6000 ft on Highway 120), avoiding much if not all of the snow. I still carry chains, even with 4by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
I did the Toulumne to Glen Aulin, down to Waterwheel and back on the weekend of 5/31/08...10 days after the road opened. That was a great trip it was no real problems, a bit of old snow on shaded portions of the trail which can be a little tricky on the steep parts, like just above Glen Aulin. In the flat valley bottoms between Glen Aulin and Waterwheel Falls the trail was covered in some placesby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
