Like this custom made Twinkie and Zinger carrier. Holds up to 4 of your favorite trail snacks and keeps them safe during your adventures. There is also some spare room for non-essential items, like, say, batteries: Any guesses as to who carries this specialty item??by Bearproof - General Discussion
I took a few shots as I was on a flight back into SFO last Friday: North Peak and vicinity at the Sierra Crest, with Mt. Conness lower left and Sky Pilot Col upper right Falls Ridge area looking down theTuolumne River. Both sets of switchbacks are a lot of work,. Going up Yosemite Falls trail is nice in that you get the reward of being first at Columbia Rock, and then at the top of the falls, whereas going up snowcreek the reward is simply being done with the switchbacks and being into the forest...certianly less climactic. And if you go up the Yosemite Falls trail and are just plain worn out after getting to tby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Dooood! It's like asking what to do in Yosemite..infinite possibilities...as you know! I mighta missed it...when are you going? Bend has a pretty cool little downtown and the Deschurtes Brewery has a nice tour. Sisters area is also good, and the Metoleus (mentioned earlier) is a must see, an entire river popping right out of the side of a hill. The old Columbia River highway is a nice drive oby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Bummer, but it can happen to anybody anytime. Good call on going down. Whitney will still be there for your next trip! I had it happen once, at Saddlebag Lake, as we woke up the first morning of a planned 8 day trip with 7 other guys, and I was the leader. Fortunately for me I felt better after I threw up and our first day hike was "down" in Tuolumne Meadows and I was able to carry oby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yeah, thanks... I did see the pictures...and didn't recognize the 'kat, hence the question. I got to know a bunch of folks going south as we saw each other from time to time, but the contact with the northbounders was limited and we may not have even seen each other. And btw rumor has it that you have the answer on the Half Dome (?) picture posted by . True??by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Great stuff, both the photos and the blog. Making me feel guilty for not getting my stuff up sooner (it'll happen soon, at least before Chick-on returns and gives me grief about it). Must have passed you somewhere...a note in my diary says that at Mather Pass on August 8 we had a crowd that included "another guy going north"...perhaps you?by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Very Nice! The "Glacier Point Tree" is actually at the top of Sentinel Dome, and shown in the famous Ansel Adams photo. And yes, that is Tenaya Lake. I haven't seen many shots of the old Glacier Point hotel...very cool. Thanks for sharing!by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Yep, we camped there cuz we didn't have much choice by the time we got there...shoulda stopped at Duck Creek or, if we had the legs (we didn't) gone on to Virginia. I don't recall blowdowns being a problem, its just not the most camp-able lake around. There were some decent spots on the north shore, we thought.by Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. My mistake...not necessarily "safe" but relatively safer, being that Guitar Lake is surrounded by peaks that are 2500-3000 feet higher. And being below treeline is no guarantee either. And apparently being in a swimming pool may not be the answer as well! Lots of good information here... NOLS Backcountry Lightning Safety Guideby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Yikes! My wife and I left Guitar Lake that morning at 4:30 for the summit and on out to Whitney portal. As is probably usual, there were a lot of people working their way to the summit of Whitney later than I would have liked to have seen; especially those that did not seem comfortable on the rocky trail or otherwise seem less "up to the task". Its been a while, so this may help (or may not!). I took the kids when they were 10-15 years old or so. I don't recall any use trails, but easy routefinding up past the Conness Lakes to the beautiful glacial tarn about a mile south-southwest of the summit of North Peak. From there, we went about due north up steep sandy slopes (2 steps up, one slide step back) to the ridge, then easy walking to tby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
My three cents worth...I think it sounds pretty good! A few thoughts to either add clarification or futher muddy the waters, depending on how you look at it. My comments are focused on the earlier part of the trip, and if you are up for it, my recommendations generally follow Roper's "Sierra High Route" and he descibes from Lake Catherine to Cecile Lake "there should be little diffby Bearproof - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. I had mentioned to Da Bird that I had gone on a flightseeing tour about 10 years ago as a birthday present to my father, and, of course, we had to include flying over Yosemite as part of the day.
