QuoteMwrightTulsa Thanks! Any chance of renting in Groveland? As people have already stated, yes you can rent in the Bay Area (any REI will hook you up). In groveland, yes there is a place to rent snowshoes. For the life of me, I can't remember their name, but it is on the right hand side of the road as you go into town after you pass "twice as nice" (the secondhand store). Quotemrcondron Dogs are not allowed on any wilderness trail inside the park. One place that is an exception is the little piece of trail that cuts into the park on the way to Lord's Meadow near Sachse Spring and a bit west of Styz Pass. You can pass through there with a dog. Ahh, almost, my apologies on the "his/her" mistake. I did not mean to offend you. I hear many good things about Western Mountaineering and Mountbell. I too love to talk gear. First I have to say, I echo the point on REI. I love REI, great people work there and their return policy is excellent if you ever have any issues. Also, their annual 20% off sale is going on right now, so if you want to buy gear now is the time to do. Sometimes you pay a little more there, but they stand behind everything they sell. How surprising, a post about backpacking and not whining/complaining about scalpers, what a pleasant change. Anyways, JZ, I have to echo the advice given by Almost There as it is excellent. Quotecalipidder I still am a fan of my ursack but most of time I carry my Bearikade for peace of mind. That's one thing that rarely comes up in the bear canister argument. Usually it's three variables: approved status vs weight vs cost. I feel like I sleep a bit better when I have a hard sided canister along. And that peace of mind is worth a few $ and oz. As an ultralightest, I am always looking to shave weight. I will buy or make new equipment to save a few onces and 21/2 pounds for a bear can is nearly 20% of my base weight. I hate bear cans and use them only where legally required to do so. If you were using the 2007 model ursack, you were using a now out dated model. Quoteplawrence It's bad enough that there really is no longer decent "affordable" lodging inside Yosemite When did "affordable lodging stop"? Correct me if I'm wrong, but an "America the Beautiful" national park pass is only $80. So for me, spending 40 nights in the backcountry, that's only $2 a night for lodging. It doesn't get much more affordable than that, aby oakroscoe - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Ok, I'm gonna guess this is an exceptionally unpopular viewpoint, and I must preface it by disclosing the fact that I'm a backpacker and you couldn't pay me to stay in a campground, but why isn't the Park selling these camping spots/Half Dome permits for the price the scalpers are? Quotetomdisco The problem with any permit line are the folks who don't just ask for a permit but tie up the line with a gazillion questions totally oblivious of those waiting. As for getting yelled out, Mr Chick-on I have learned the hard way, when going with the gf, I keep it simple and on trails.
