It would have to go from to Half Dome (8842ft) to North Dome (7540 ft) or, better yet, to Glacier Point (7214ft). That would give you a drop of 1628ft. I'd go! I have to admit that I irrationally liked the idea of the zip line. That would be really cool! As faby chicagocwright - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Despite the horrendous permit process it seems they solved the oft mentioned problems by the anti-Half Domers of crazy lines at the cables. I haven't seen anyone from last year post about lines on the permit days. The Family Pet Story. Lucky Dog: In the early afternoon of June 9, an eleven year old black Labrador named “Sweety” escaped its leash and chased a squirrel over the stone wall at the popular Tunnel View lookout, falling down a steep embankment leading to an area of extreme exposure typical to Yosemite National Park. Fascinating articles. I'm surprised there is not more debate. Everyone here seems to accept the wisdom that treatment or filtering is necessary. And I'm not ready to differ from that yet because most of the time "conventional wisdom" is established for a reason. Besides anecdotal stories from hikers and their experiences I wish there was actually more science and testing. Or maybeby chicagocwright - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I know this is the first year for full-time permits but last year permits were required on weekends. Do you Half Dome Naysayers ;-), perceive the weekends last year to still be overcrowded? Or did the permit system solve the over-crowding problem? One of the arguments I heard for full week permits was that the Weekenders were pushed to the Weekdays. Assuming the snow is melted by my trip in August, I was interested in staying at Tioga Pass Resort. Their web site says they have no phone and accept reservations only by email. I have emailed twice with no response. I was kind of thinking that perhaps reservations are made well in advance and I have no shot-perhaps explaining the no response. Anyone here know more? I don't think that it is "fine" to snatch up a bunch of permits in hopes of trading. But it isn't prohibited. And I believe flagging those items on Craigslist may be abusing the flagging system and probably breaking the rules that are intended for activity that really is illegal. At this point I really don't think it matters anymore. I hope and hopefully it isn't wishful thinkingby chicagocwright - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Actually an exact such forum does exist. I have empathy for you. I saw folks who gathered as many pemits as possible in hopes of trading for the dates they desired. The system that will sell out at 7:02 this morning has frustrated and created desperation. The flaggers believe they can't know for sure so they are flagging everything. I like the idea also. I halfway thought of suggesting we all go in on June 1 to get as many of the September Half Dome permits as possible. We could do a better job of fairly distributing them then the current system. And it would keep them away from the scalpers.by chicagocwright - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I've done that particular hike before for a charity event race. Amazingly it only takes about 20 minutes. But you do finish with a great view of the other towering structures, the canyons and the lake. Unfortunately even without a pack I can't use the Sears Tower. Agreed. Fully. I've carried the approximate weight on 4 mile, Mist and Yosemite Falls trails (and at times carried smaller kids). Those trails and hikes were much shorter and elevation wasn't as much a factor. Unfortunately the best I can do is rely on that experience and get in marathon ready shape for the hike I am doing. I had approximated 22 miles from Tenaya Lake to Happy Isles via Clouds Rest and Half Dome. I think Happy Isles to Clouds Rest is close to 25 miles. Maybe that is what you are referring to? Given my location, the availability of non-paved trails is somewhat limited. There are forest preserves but even those paths are mostly paved. I'm skipping the 26.2 mile hike this year and instead gearing all my training to the Clouds Rest/Half Dome Hike. Last night I kicked off my training for my upcoming August trip. Unfortunately where I live is devoid of anything but long flats and meadows surrounded by paved trails and high towering structures.
