My friend had microspikes, all I had were my snowshoes. Neither were ideal on water ice like we encountered but we only had to walk across 15 or 20 feet of it in total, and it was flat in those sections. There were a few spots where we had to leave the trail to circumnavigate a few ice flows to avoid having to walk across angled water ice with a bad runout. Would have been safer if it were all snby AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Erratic sighting...by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
This is winter? Oh, yeah, this is winter. The snow started shortly after this, at around 8200' on Echo Creek. Only got down to 34F at 9200' on Saturday night. We ran into the Tuolumne rangers on the road near Tenaya Lake. The road is the only skiable snow in the area at the moment. Dunno how it looks up near the Meadows but I can't imagine very good.by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I don't have any microspikes or I'd bring those, just the heavy 2# crampons... will probably just go without... the snowshoes have crampons anyway... I'll post some pics when I get back...by AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Any idea on current conditions on the Mist Trail? Wondering if I should bring crampons. Going Happy Isles->Sunrise HSC->Tenaya Lake->Snow Creek starting Friday AM. (Welcome to join if you want)by AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

I figured we might run into you. There were fresh tire tracks and fresh footprints going out of Shingle Springs, but no spot with less snow where a car had parked very long. It looked like some people hiked in Saturday morning, got snowed on and decided to turn around. Cool that some of those oak trees survived. What's next?by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Saw a bald eagle at Kibbie on Friday. And heard a great horned owl that night. I finally got to try out my new 5F quilt... nice and toasty warm. Some serious clouds moving through Friday night and the white stuff started Saturday morning around 8AM. We were gonna spend the day at the lake...but after about six inches by noon...decided it was time to get down the Shingle Springs road before myby AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Hope my comment didn't come across as snarky... now that I read it again I see it could be interpreted that way. I guess I was referring more to illegal fire rings, discarded TP, mylar balloons, etc. Removing graffiti without making a huge mess is a tough task involving solvents and a lot of elbow grease and is probably best left to the NPS. A few years ago some idiots left giant orange spray paiby AndrewF - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion

Well I'm just going to have to go up there and see for myself how bad the "damage" is sometime soon. Of course it's a natural process but it sure was nice hiking through that mature forest.by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Awesome pics. That sunset on Conness is outrageous. It was kind of bittersweet looking at your pics because I was gonna be up there this weekend but just found out I have to deal with some stuff at home. But it's always nice to see great pics from one of my favorite spots in the Sierra. I've probably been to Young Lakes more times than anywhere else except maybe Little Yosemite. Also, depending on which way you came from you may have walked right under the Bachar-Yerian, one of the boldest climbs in Yosemite. If you haven't heard of it, it's worth a little googling to read the story of the first ascent... There was a fistfight involved. A good piece of Yosemite lore. My wife and I climbed a much easier route (5.8) up the center of the face of Medlicott a few years ago.by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Cool... Next time you head up that trail to Cathedral Lakes you should loop back over the top of Medlicott...it's awesome up there by "Lake of the Domes" and there's a cool route down the outlet creek on the north side...by AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

QuoteBearproof No animal-style fries? They are one of my favorite post-trip calorie bombs. The food is actually from Jolly Kone in Bridgeport, not In-N-Out. Jolly Kone is like In-N-Out but vastly improved. I realize that's a bold statement. Take an In-N-Out burger, add bacon, make it 50% larger, and you've got Jolly Kone. The fries are way better too. Oh, and you can get a swirl cone which IMOby AndrewF - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
