Yeah weather doesn't look like its gonna be amazing but whatever, what I do know from living up in twain harte for 19 years is that generally the weather forecasts are crapshoots anyway. 6 to 1 half dozen to the other as to whether or not the clouds hit the canyon just right. Either waythough im getting out there and having some fun. We've been talking and it sounds like we have decided thatby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Ooh didn't know about the fire regs at Kibbie. Cool cool. Thanks for the info!by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Im finally doing it. Heading out to Eleanor next weekend for 4 days 3 nights. Originally we did not think that they were going to open the roads out there so we were going to walk in from Hetch Hetchy and camp somewhere around Eleanor for all 4 days and take day hikes into the surrounding areas. With the roads looking to be open I am half tempted to just shoot up to Kibbie lake and Spend all 3 niby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Glad you posted about this, had been watching the closure and was wondering if they were going to be writing up a new one. I am planning a trip the 22-25 out eleanor and kibbie ridge area and was planning on hiking in from hetch hetchy. I suppose it will just be quicker to drive in now. Anyone have any idea how busy its going to be out there? Was kinda looking forward to having to walk in the 9miby randomsteve95370 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. News & Discussion
Wow thanks ttilley. Loads of places to go! Also thanks for telling me about the gate times at hetch hetchy, didn't know about that. Would you happen to know roughly how long it takes to get to the gate from the overnight parking area you pointed out? I would very much like to have things planned out so that I get back to the car the last day in time to drive out before they close the gate and locby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I appreciate the tips. I opened this thread mainly to see what you guys do because of closures and such come winter but I do appreciate being able to hear what each of you guys do when it comes to winter backpacking. I know in my neck of the woods up 108 they pretty much shut down every forestry road by december 1 and around there they close the entire pass at Snowpark just above strawberry so unby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks for the Ideas guys. Looks like with a bit of planning and maybe getting some new gear I will be able to keep myself busy through the winter with some fun outdoor activities.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Didn't know that about Tioga road. Thanks. Laurel lake looks like it would be a fun place to visit. Looking at the map some more and thinking about what you said with Hetch Hetchy being open year round I am starting to think a hike out to eleanor may be in my future. I haven't camped at Point Reyes but I know which campsite you are talking about. Me and some friends went down there a few monby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey guys, I'm looking to pick your brains on the subject of Fall/Winter camping up in the sierra. I have to admit I have done basically 0 backpacking, camping, or hiking in the later side of fall or in winter for that matter. I would like to change that this year and get out there and see some of the different sites and such but I really have no idea where to go. I know that once we get anykind oby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thx for the suggestions guys I appreciate it very much. When I said remote/less used I just ment something less like say Pinecrest lake campgrounds that have been 100% full all year so far and have campsites like 4ft apart with nothing in between. Obviously you have to give up the solitude of backpacking when you you get the convenience of being able to drive down there. I'm going to give those sby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
ah ok, thats what I thought. I didn't believe that there was a road out there anymore but I thought maybe the forestry station out there had a road I didn't know about. Sounds like it won't work for the big camping trip that I was thinking about using it for as there would be people who would not be up for any kind of hiking, but I am definitely going to go out there with my hiking friends for sby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Awesome I knew there had to be someway of getting out there still. We have a decent number of people who have been wanting to go camping lately, some of which are hikers some are not so I was thinking it would be nice to find a place semi easy to get to and setup camp so that the none hikers could mill around but still have something to enjoy while the hikers head out and do day hikes. hey guys, long time. Work picked up out of no where the past few months and I haven't had the time to do much of anything so I haven't been around the compuer much. But I'm hoping thats soon to change. Me and some friends were talking and we were thinking it would be neat if we could get out towards the cherry lake/ Eleanor Lake area. I Know that Eleanor its self doesn't sit in the closure but Iby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I went out to chewing gum for the day last monday and while the Gianelli trail head was packed with cars no one was at the lake or even in the meadow. I have to say right now the meadow out to chewing gum is very very pretty. Everything is still green and lupines and several other flowers abound. I don't normally post Trip reports or pictures or anything of my little day hikes but if anyone of yoby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Very Cool. Curious as to why the area is closed to fishing. Do you have any further information on that? Is it the entire carson-iceberg area? Or just a small section that is closed off? Looks like a neat are to walk around I have come close to disaster creek a few times but have never gone on up the cascades, maybe next time I will do some hiking further out. Thanks for the info! So beautiful. Would you mind if I stole a couple of those pics to use as desktop backgrounds on my computer? I have a "Star" themed slide show going and those pics of the mountains with the stars would go perfectlyby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Nice trip and great pictures. My only problem with long trips where you cover big distances is that I would want to stop and explore each place for hours. I could easy spend 6 days on just 20miles of the NF Cherry let alone all of the rest of those places and lakes you guys zipped by. But thats just me I love to explore and explore learning everything I can about each place I go.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Lol at all of you. Gone for three days and look what happens Anyway. Thanks for all the compliments and such its great to be recieved well. Im glad Long lake was nice I still want to get out there as soon as time permits maybe for an overnight in a few weeks. Everyone else is right about the weight. I am fairly new to backpacking (Though a veteran at hiking in general) and I went out on a 2day with some friends recently to see how we liked our gear and what we wanted to add/remove ect. Basically a test trip. I knew going in that I didn't want to be carrying anything over 30lbs on my back being that 30lbs is about 1/4th my body weight so I paired downby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks everyone! Im taking off today and will be back late sunday from a trip to visit some family down in the city but when I get back hopefully I can get another Trip report up. Anyway, I always enjoy reading everyone elses trip reports so im glad to see people enjoy reading mine.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Well this is my first trip report that I have ever put together so bear with my while I figure this out. Anyway I went out to kennedy lake a few weeks ago (Before I knew about this forums) but I thought it would be nice to share a few pictures and thoughts about the trip and area that I visted so as to pay back a little bit to the community. * Well thats enough of that, lets get to the trip.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Adele? Would that be the smallish lake up on the ridge to the East of waterhouse? Its sounding like its a bit to busy for my liking so I may just run up there for a day hike in a week or so.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
I don't know how bad the road out to herring creek is so Im a little hesitant to take off that way being that I only have a 2 wheel drive car as of right now. It does fine with dirt roads and stuff it just can't do any big ruts, deep mud, or anything that would require the clearance of a truck or 4 wheel. If anyone has been out Herring creek this year I would love to hear the road conditions. Butby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thats Good to know. 5$ is cheap. You said 5$ per visit so is that a flat 5$ even for a trip that is several days long?by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
interesting I didn't know it was a lake that was visited all that often. Being that I was having a hard time finding any trails/blog posts about the lake and how to get there I was assuming that people didn't make it up there very often. I am also surprised that people make it to the lake from the north side. Looking at the maps it looks like the north side has some very large steep mountains. I'm looking to head out to waterhouse lake in maybe 3 weeks from today and was just curious if anyone had ever been out there? If anyone knows the area at all I could use some help picking a route out to it. At first I was thinking about just going from pinecrest and hiking up to Cleo's bath (Been there many a times so I know it well) and then follow the canyon up to it. But, after realizing thatby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Thanks. I totally understand what your saying. Its my fault how this conversation about bear cans got off. The whole bear can/hanging method has had me a little perturbed as of late because of some people who have basically told me that I should be dead because of the how lazy I am in the way I have chosen in the past to keep food away from animals and that basically I give hikers a bad name ectby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Again you seem to have missed the point by a mile. I said, will say, and will continue to say that I am not camping in, or even close to the Yosemite border and therefore am not required by law to carry a bear barrel with me. When/if I go somewhere that requires bear barrels then I will by all means bring one not only because its the law but also because most of the time those laws are in place fby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
