Hey all! Long time. So I live up off highway 108 and am just getting off work and between work stress and this heat I have decided I really need to go and spend a night or 2 away from everything and everyone. Normally I would just pack up hit a trail head and hike 4-5 miles and find a place without anyone to bother me, Trouble being with covid this year Highway 108 and everything near by haby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Never been a fan of the MH stuff, to many preservatives and I just don't like the flavor of most of them. Because of this I tend to dehydrate and make most of my own food and what I don't do homemade I buy from PackitGourmet (Amazing stuff there) because of this I almost always just end up doing ziplocks and then cook in my pot and Believe me you need the cozy, especially if its gonna be the leasby randomsteve95370 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Love the trip report. Personally I always find the trips that don't quite go according to plan are the ones you remember most haha. Love the picture of your food, gotta ask though whats with the 2 rolls of tape looking stuff? and is that a table cloth in the bottom right of the picture?by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra

Lol you guys are all to much. I'm glad everyone enjoyed the pictures and am sorry if I stepped on any toes by saying Kibbie wasn't exactly what I expected.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
See my other post below for more detail but I definitely agree that I was doing it wrong! One day I will save up and get a pack raft and then no corner of Kibbie will be safe from me and my hammock!by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotettilley Nice pictures and report, thanks. Out of curiosity, did you park at Cherry and walk in, or was the road open to either the Eleanor trailhead or Shingle Springs? I've enjoyed camping there twice, but on both occasions it was early season and I had the place to myself. Snow camp during the first drought year, and April of last year. The road is open all the way to the top ofby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Finally made it out to Kibbie Last week after trying for almost a month. For one reason or another everybody that was suppose to go with me bailed so I ended up heading out to Kibbie Myself. So heres a little Picture report of the trip. Left Fairly early on Tuesday morning and made it out to Cherry a little before 9 yes that is a vulture bottom right Lots of snow plants on the wayby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Interesting. That I did not know. Gotta leave it to minds greater then mine I guess. I'd still be curious to know if the average from 91 to 2020 really changed that much from the previous 30yr. I know most of you guys happen to live in the bay area so you get a lot of your info and feeling on how the water and snow situation is going from your trips up here and water reports and stuff but I liveby randomsteve95370 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. 57% and 63% is definitely low. But not catastrophically low like last year. Considering the "Average" they talk about is like a 100 year average a few years of drought is not going to be enough to change that. Give it another 15-25 years of this and then it might actually affect what the average is for the entire recorded history of snow pack for this area.by randomsteve95370 - Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Called the station. Gate opened on the 15th just as was posted.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
May just have to hit up Eleanor creek then and see how far up we can make it. I've gotten a new mirrorless type DSLR camera now so pictures going forward will not just be from my phone. Scanning over that old trip report 1 thing I noticed I didn't include was that old use trail from Frog creek cabin up to the ridge. The day we explored up frog creek to Laurel we didn't leave laurel lake until 8by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
That is an awesome resource. Keeping that one in the bookmarks for sure. Pretty surprised about how much snow is shown at Sachse (But that just shows how much I know ) , don't know if I feel like hiking through 5ft of snow right now. Might just stick around Kibbie and Eleanor then. You ever explore up the Eleanor creek Chick? I know getting to it is a bit of a pain but I do enjoy the main waterfaby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Was thinking about heading out towards kibbie this coming weekend and maybe even hitting up the ridge line and heading out towards the Cherry canyon..... Haven't been out in that neck of the woods in nearly a year so I've got no idea what to expect snow wise. Anyone have a clue? I know i've seen people post snow pack reports and stuff, has one of those been done recently near the Kibbie ridge areby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Yeah I read that, hoping it is. Office is closed for the day already. If no one knows for certain i'll give them a call tomorrow and post back what I find out.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Any one here know if the road is open out to Eleanor yet?by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey hadn't checked the forums for a little bit. Anyway, for this trip we just hit Rancheria and back but even will all the water along the way there were little to no mosquitoes out there at all. Even though its been fairly warm at night we have been in a nice little routine of hitting freezing temps for a night or 2 every few weeks and thats help so far with the bugs but its not gonna last long.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Would love to do a Vernon lake loop trip sometime before it gets to hot/dry/busy and would def want to check out Tiltill as well because I have never been out that way at all. I tend to do all my backpacking in the Emigrant because my best hiking buddy is banned from the entire Yosemite area sadly. I do want to see some more of it though. You'll have to point me towards some information on this mby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Ah yeah thats just up river from where we filtered water. Didn't have the phone on me at the time so thats why no pictures. Great falls though, the sound of it from the campsite was so very nice to go to sleep and to wake up to.by randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
When you say rancheria Falls proper that must be above the bridge then? Or is that the cascade that comes out just below the bridge? Didn't end up venturing past the bridge uphill. I spent what extra time there was on saturday hiking up to Le conte and then on sunday the friends I was with wanted to get up and head out because of the gate closing at 5 and having to get up for work Monday morningby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Headed out to Hetch Hetchy over the weekend. Took the advice I got from you guys and went out towards the Camp area in the Cedars at Rancheria Creek. Weather ended up being great and the camp area had plenty of great hammock trees as well. All the Creeks and Falls were running and the trail on the way out was pretty soggy in areas. Even so with a little bit of effort it was easy enough to keeby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Quotemrcondron You would have a hard time getting to that spot as it's pretty cliffy there. You would have to approach the site after crossing the bridge. Even then it may be unsuitable for camping due to not being able to get 100 feet from the water. This time of year the camping area will not be crowded plus it is a large area. There is also lots of space just downstream below the cascadeby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Hey Guys so im getting the backpacking bug bad and have been looking around at where I can poke out to for a few days without running into to much snow and I thought about rancheria falls. Been out to hetch hetchy before but never out past Wapama falls so I've got a couple questions before I go running out there headlong like the crazy hermit I am. I've heard that Rancheria Falls can get fairby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Don't Know if your still planning on coming up this coming weekend but it looks like quite the storm is going to be rolling in middle of this week and last tell mid next week. I live just a little bit north of Yosemite and local stations are calling for around 5 feet of fresh snow over this next week with most of it falling Friday-Sunday. I'm calling of my trip as I don't want to take any risks wby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Went up to Frogcreek just before Beehive on Tuesday March 1st and there was hardly a trace of snow up until about 6500 when you break over the ridge up to that little unamed pond just before Frog creek just under 1.5 Miles from bee hive. At that point the trail was fully covered in snow but walked on for sure. Not sure how much was up there. I walked off trail past the pond down to Frog creek andby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Temps were pretty nice in my opinion. Was dropping down to about 30-35 at night and getting up in the 50's during the day. Yeah the lake was not down to far. It is however neat to see how much more land is exposed from the lake just dropping the few feet that it did. Was a fun trip, now I just have to get back out there asap and hike kibbieby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Alright so I said I would put a TR up here of my little trip out to Eleanor so that's what I am going to do. I would have had it up a week or so ago but I was out of the state for almost 2 weeks right after the trip and have not had my computer with me or the time to do so. Anyway, excuses aside lets see how much I can remember of the trip out there. :p I have been out to cherry dozeby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Alright. Just got off the phone with the Groveland ranger station. Permit is filled out and in the box for Saturday through Tuesday. I asked and both the Damn and Shingle springs trail heads are open all the way out, the gate on the damn does not close until Dec. 15 like usual. I am going to be running in to town today to buy my last few things (Danishes mainly, can't go without those :p but alsoby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
Took a trip up over 108 and out to Lundy Canyon a week or so ago to spend the day hiking the canyon and seeing what we could see. I had never been to lundy canyon or up to 20 lakes basin before but the friend I went with had and he was very impressed with how different the canyon looked with the snow and ice that was around from the storm that had hit there a few days earlier. Doh, im an idiot. Lol! Thats right I remeber looking at those pictures you took of long lake and really wanting to get out there even more. Its still on my list thats for sure. Those pictures are pretty amazing, I love the few you got of that bald Eagle! Its gonna be something to see the area out there again that much I can tell. I have never made it all the way out to campsite #9 beforeby randomsteve95370 - Backpacking and Hiking Yosemite and the Sierra
